How does the hero differ from his/her sidekick? Example one is more confident than the other etc.

Batman and Robin. They differ in age and costumes.
Superman and Krypto. Krypto looks like a dog and Superman doesn't.

One does the work the other just assests. Or you could say the sidekick gives the hero a reason for being there.
