That's a good question. To experiment with that, get a clear bowl or glass of plain water. In a separate glass of salt water, color it with food coloring. Gently pour the salt water into the clear water and see where it goes before the plain water takes eventually takes on the food coloring as well.

The salt water will sink at first because it is more dense, but over time the two will mix and become salt water.

they will just combine together and create a less salty water then the salt water you put in, but more then the plain water

Obviously you have never heard of OSMOSIS... "water goes where the salt is"... if you mix salt and fresh water together it will dilute the salt water but the final product will still be saltier than fresh water and fresher than salt water.

salt will dissolve over a short period of time, increases if you stir and after reaching satuation the rest if there are any will sink to the bottom.
