A judgment in a civil case is like a verdict in a criminal case -- it is a determination of what happened and who (if anyone) is at fault.

If the judgment is for the defendant (the person being sued), then they are not required to pay anything -- and they may be able to recover some of what it cost to defend the lawsuit.

If the judgment is for the plaintiff (the person who brought the suit), then that winning party can attempt to recover whatever it is they were suing for.

Say you were being sued in small claims court for $100. If you lost (judgment for the other person), you would owe $100, plus the cost of the small claims suit (usually about $50 overall).

Say you were being sued for a million dollars in an auto accident case. If you lost, you would owe the million dollars (if the other person can prove that much harm actually occurred), plus their costs -- which could be several hundred thousand dollars.

I was recently involved (as an attorney, not a party) in a complex case where the requested damages were over 100 million, and legal fees were running over a million dollars a month.

So, it all depends on what the nature of the lawsuit is, and how much money is at stake.
