Geez, that was the original charge and after investigation it was reduced to battery so why all the hostility? It is common for prosecutors to go for the max with any race and then reduce the charges after further investigation.

Do you people think they should get NOTHING for ganging up on this kid and beating him? So they were provoked, so what? Kids of all colors are provoked on a daily basis in HS but doesn't that give them the right to go get 5 of their buddies and retaliate.

I just don't get it. I was raised in the CITY of Atlanta and have been around integration since I was born. I went to an integrated elementary, middle and high school and have lots of friends of many races so I'm as far from Racist as you can get, but it still irks me when people feel they have to protest just to protest and get on TV.

I just don't get what they're protesting about. Nobody's going to jail for 60 years so let the kids do their probation and go home.

Adrienne - so the one white kid should go to jail? For what? Felony of getting his a** kicked?

2007-09-20 09:40:53 · update #2

Kelly, I understand your point and I get it, however those fights were not 6 on1. They were even amounts of people fighting each other and NEITHER went to jail then. As far as the gun thing goes there was not enough evidence to prove what happened one way or another.

TW - That sucks regarding the racism towards you and I understand what you're saying. I'm not going to sit here and say that Jena has a big sign out front that says "welcome black people. we love you", but is marching really the solution? All it really does it get people more fired up and disliking each other even more. There are other ways to change laws and right wrongs than just marching. It's almost become so commonplace now that nobody even pays attention anymore.

2007-09-20 09:47:01 · update #4

Rabelle - If everyone marched everytime a kid played a racist joke on another they'd never stop moving. It's high school for chrissake. They were suspended from school. Thats' the same punishment the colleges get when they do their black face party nonsense.

Honeyb - Sorry sweetie but that's an old article. Why don't you quit going back to that one and read something recent. The story's not THAT cut and dry. I just don't see why everyone thinks a protest is the answer. Once this is over then Sharpton and the gang leaving changing nothing for the future. They should be going after the laws and Govt of the state using lawful methods rather than dragging a bunch of people to be on TV for a day. This will change nothing unfortunately.

honeyb - on another note. I may not be black, but I'm about as close as you can get without being one.

I dont know all the details of the case but from what I understand he should have never been charged with attempted murder anyway. I think thats what people are upset about. I think they should get some punishment but how often do you hear about high school kids being arrested for attempted murder after a school yard brawl? Not often. It should have been assault from the get go and all of them even the kids that hung the rope from the tree should have been suspended, if not expelled.

People are protesting the injustice.

The white boys who beat up the black boy were suspended. There were no charges filed. The white man who pulled a gun out on the black students had no charges filed against him. If you suspend the white students for the fight, then you suspend the black students for a fight. There is no difference in the two fights except for the race of the students. In neither case was the victim seriously injured. Also, if you don't know the other facts of the case, the jury is tainted. The public defender should have requested a change of venue. He also should have requested a new jury that did not contain relatives of the prosecution's witness. But he didn't do any of that. In fact, he presented NO witnesses, NO evidence, and he rested his case without saying anything to the jury or the judge. He could have stayed at home. That is what's being protested...the miscarriage of justice. And if these boys were white in a predominantly black town where blacks were being given a slap on the wrist, I'd feel the exact same way.

ADDED: This fight was not 6 on 1 either. It just so happens that out of the white students fighting, he was the only one to get hurt (scrapes and bruises at that). AND there's not enough evidence to prove that Mychal Bell ever kicked him either (even the witness couldn't say for sure that it was Bell who kicked him) but that didn't stop the DA from saying that he used his shoe as a weapon. By the way, the law doesn't care how many people were involved in the fight (that merely decides how many people are charged). They care about the nature and the severity of the fight. None of which were cause for the charges handed down. And don't think for a second that there was only one white student who beat the black student up.

ADDED: Do your research. No charges were filed against the 7 white students who beat up 1 black student. They were suspended. What were you saying again?

no they are not being charged with attempted murder. the charges were dropped down. AND NO THE CHARGES WERE NOT DROPPED DOWN BECAUSE OF FURTHER INVESTIGATION. THE CHARGES WERE DROPPED DOWN BECAUSE PEOPLE RAISED HELL ABOUT THE ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGE. AND IF SOMEONE HUNG NOOSES FROM A TREE THEY WERE SITTING UNDER AND THEN RAN AROUND CALLING THEM THE N WORD AND OTHER RACIAL SLURS, THEN THAT PERSON IS ASKING FOR IT. NO I DO NOT AGREE THAT THE CHILDREN SHOULD GET AWAY WITH BEATING THAT BOY. i THINK ALL PARTIES SHOULD GET AN ASSALT CHARGE NOT A SECOND DEGREE BATTERY CHARGE. THE CHILD THAT HAS THE WORST OF THE CHARGES I THINK HE SHOULD GET A LITTLE MORE THAN JUST PROBATION HE HAS A RAP SHEET FOR GETTING INTO THIS TYPE OF TROUBLE. I ALSO DO NOT LIKE THE FACT THAT NO ONE IS TALKING ABOUT THE BLACK BOY THAT GOT THE HELL BEAT OUT OF HIM ALSO. I DO NOT THINK THAT THEY SHOULD GET AWAY SCOTT FREE BUT I DO FIND IT STUPID THAT ORIGINALY THE PROSECUTION TRIED TO PURSUE ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES BECAUSE OF THE BOY'S TENNIS SHOES. KIDS GET INTO FIGHTS AND I THINK THIS WHOLE SITUATION HAS BEEN BLOWN OUT OF PROPORTION ON BOTH SIDES OF THE COLOR SCALE. AND JUST FOR THE RECORD I DO NOT THINK THESE PEOPLE ARE JUST TRYING TO GET ON TELEVISION. IF PEOPLE OF ALL RACES COULD WALK A DAY IN THE SHOES OF A BLACK PERSON OR A MIDDLE EASTERN PERSON THEN THE WOULD SEE WHY PEOPLE REACT THE WAY THE DO TO CERTIAN SITUAIONS.
BUT IF ALL THE CHARGES STICK THIS YOUNG MAN IS LOOKING AT 30 YEARS.

ANOTHER THING I THINK IS THAT BLACK PEOPLE HAVE TO DO BETTER AS FAR A SUPPORTING THEIR COMMUNITY AND FALLING INTO THESE NEGETIVE STEROTYPES. I MEAN NO ONE EVER TRIES TO DO ANYTHING UNLESS IT IS TIME TO ACT A DAMN FOOL. WHICH I DO NOT THINK IS THE CASE IN THIS SITUATION. I THINK THIS IS BEING HANDLED RATHER PEACEFULLY. BUT IN THE PAST IT HAD BEEN REALLY SAD. AND WE NEED TO STOP MAKING COMMENTS ON THE NEWS LOOKING LIKE COMPLETE IDIOTS.

I'm not going to read the rest of your question and just answer the top line since the rest is probably just you standing on a soap box.

The charge of attempted murder was just recently dropped within the past week and you tell me what high school fight turns into charges of aggravated battery??? Yeah.........2 points

First the poor White kids got nothing for ganging up on the Black kid, pulling out a shot gun etc. It has nothing to do with wanting to get on TV it has everything to do with mistreatment because of a persons skin color. Do some reading first before you comment and find out what the Prosecutor told them about being able to destroy their lives. If they had been White they would have gotten suspension or a conversation from the principle. Just because your not racist sweetie doesn't mean that people around you aren't. I don't like it either. I'm of Indian and Italian decent but when people see me all they see is Black.

I was personally unaware that the charges had been reduced. I agree with that.

While I think the kids who hung the nooses (who, according to the school staff, also had a history of bullying non-whites) should be expelled and put into counselling, the kids that started the fight should have kept their temper in check, or at least resisted throwing the first punch.
The battery charge is understandable, I suppose, but unfortunate.

Dude he already spent a year jail.

---

"Adrienne - so the one white kid should go to jail? For what? Felony of getting his a** kicked?"

One of the Black students was jumped by 3 white guys and beaten in the head with glass bottles?

---

"but is marching really the solution?" - Well, what are you doing? You are in no position to point fingers about how a people are trying support someone. You are online just trying to make people feel ignorant. Grow up man.

---

"If everyone marched everytime a kid played a racist joke on another they'd never stop moving."

This march is about injustice. They charged Mychal Bell as an adult and sent him to adult prison. Yes, they reduced the charges as an adult, but they can still charge him as a juvenile with attempted murder. Plus there are other students whose charges are pending.

---

"I may not be black, but I'm about as close as you can get without being one."

That's insult. I advise you to never say that again, especially face to face with a Black person.

Well said. I agree with you. Bringing the media & Al Sharpton in here just fans the flames of racism. Violence is NOT acceptable regardless of the motivation. When a crime is committed one must be held accountable. If the white guys committed a crime, then punish them accordingly, do not set others free for committing a crime. That isn't justice.

Besides Mychal Bell has prior violent crimnal history. So there's a pattern with that young man. He has anger issues. He was charged with attempted murder, BUT convicted of aggravated assult. It sounds like he was justly convicted.

This is truly a sad situation. Good luck. 2D

And do you prejudiced jerks consider the fact those white kids provoked and as I see it threatened the black kids by hanging nooses from the tree? Yeah you all keep claiming not to be prejudiced! Your words are as hollow as are your hearts! If the noose threat had been handled properly, and as the hate crime it was, this would never have gone this far, and that poor little white boy went to a school dance that same night, 3 hours later,so why attempted murder to begin with? I hate that I agree with Al Sharpton on anything! But that DA needs to be prosecuted!
