Basically, most of my days are free because I only go on an audition once or twice a month. However, I'm afraid to take restaurant shifts during the day in case an audition comes up. Usually, I only get 24 hours notice or less, so should i just take the day shifts and if I get an audition try to get someone to cover for me. I'm pretty sure I would be fired if nobody could cover the shift and I didn't show up. Or do most actors only take night shifts. But then, how do I go to acting class which usually occurs in the nights? Also, I feel like I could be making money during those days that I'm not auditioning instead of sitting around waiting for a call from my agent...Do you know of any jobs that allow for that flexibility to take off for an hour or two when i need to for an audition? My father said outside sales jobs, but I don't feel like I'm that great at selling things and I feel like those jobs are all based on commission and I don't think that it's easy to sell that stuff. Help...

If you can type, apply to temp agencies for office work. Most actors work in restaurants or do temp work.

It sounds to me as though you are doing all the right things. Have you tried having a chat with your boss about auditions? Certainly if you are a good employee, he will give you a little slack. It is so hard to make money selling anything. Food service is still best for actors. Y'know having a night shift is not a bad idea if you can switch shifts if you are in a play. If you get a film role, you will have to take a leave of absence from your job, because you never know when they are going to run over into the evenings. But it's great getting time and a half at union rates.
Good luck, you are on the right track!

If you can't sell people things how do you expect to be an actor? Selling is all about convincing the people to buy the product, much like convincing people that your acting is real. Everytime you go in for an audition, you're going in to sell yourself. If you can't sell other objects how do you sell yourself?

However I do understand not wanting to dive into sales because unlike auditions people usually aren't looking for what you're selling.

Try looking for a job that might be flexible. Maybe a small business or small shop. A place where the boss knows your situation and doesn't mind if you have to leave for a few hours for an audition. This won't be easy, but if you have the free time it's worth looking for.
