just believe stereotypes and falsehoods about the other side to make themselves feel good? Judging by the idiocy on here about Republicans and Democrats alike, I am guessing the second alternative.

Apparently, based on observation, the vast majority if people would rather believe in stereotypes, and just absorb and repeat back what they are told to believe.

Very few seem to want to put the effort into thinking for themselves, and into learning the reality of situations, let alone actually spending the effort to treat each situation or individual uniquely (rather than as part of a stereotyped set).

It's intellectual laziness -- taking the path of least cognition -- and it's the major reason the world is going to the abyss in a handbasket.

They take the path of least resistance. That is normal, that is why the politicians just keep repeating the same old rhetoric. People have become socially lazy and would rather have someone else do their thinking for them. If you repeat a lie, long enough it becomes accepted fact, if you repeat an accepted fact then it becomes law. Honest debate is an art form and causes real personal growth, we have lost a big part of that art form to TV and the talking heads. When I first heard of Y/A I thought that this would begin to bring it back, but alas, it is just another regurgitation of the talking heads.

Most of the stereotyping and falsehoods are done by trolls just trying to get a rise out of people. Dont feed the trolls and they will go elsewhere.

Most people want to have an open mind and be informed, and they also think they are this way. Sadly, however, most people's self assessments are wrong. They are like the people in Plato's cave. The ones who never venture into the light and who believe reality consists of shadows.

you are right.it is too much trouble for most to change the channel and get a second perspective on anything. if bugs bunny were on the dem/rep ticket 1/3 would vote for them, the base as it is called.then there are those who do not vote and then whine about how much they do not like it. i watch cnn,fox news and headline to get the big picture , not just partisan talking points from oreilley, blitzer or whomever. wake up america, it is time to exist within the boundries of common sense.

People want to believe in stereotypes so they can feel superior and demonize the people they disagree with.

Hitler and Stalin used this kind of thought process... so I guess people can be succesful if they emulate people like that... afterall, they were successful (for a time).

You lean to one side or the other whether you have accepted the fact or not.

If you don't stand for something, you will fall for anything.

If you open your mind too much your brains will fall out.

I am neither a democrat or a republican. My views are most correctly described as a middle-right conservative.

I consider myself fairly open minded.
I am more than willing to listen to opposing views and opinions so long as the person is willing to listen to mine.

I'm a conservative with a liberal as a best friend...doesn't get much more open minded then that for my kind.

Isn't that why most questions posted here suggest the answers they want to receive? I have to admit, I just did it myself. I do try to engage people in meaningful dialogue where I can though. The majority of questions here should just start out with "I am right, please agree with me now."

from what i've observed for over 40yrs,the people who say they have an open mind don't really.
they say it just to appear superior.
if ones mind is made up they will desregard anything that conflicts with their beliefs.
