Paper maps because they're cheap and you can see the whole region of a place with ease instead of having to fuss with zooming in/out. which makes them better for choosing an alternate route. Directions via navigational systems are based on shortest path routes which are often the slower route.

My map/atlas has gotten me anywhere I've ever needed to be in this country whether in my car or big truck!!

I print directions from mapquest but I usually get lost anyway!
