"Chapter One..."

I would attempt to start a story with action of some sort--i.e., blood on the floor, the harness riser of the parachute torn free, stealth of an intruder, and other assortments of catching-the-reader's attention fast.

Keep your backstory limited--that portion of the story that explains what precedes the beginning. Give backstory intermittently in the story, but not all at once.

I would open up my subconsious and try to find an event that would get the reader hooked on the book. Something like this...

They were upon him, swords flashing and eyes flickering to see future oncoming blows. Parrying a blow to his abdomen Alex lunged out and caught one of his four attackers off guard, his wooden blade snaking into the crevice between the man's legs. Side-stepping and sending a wild cut behind him two more of his attackers were down. With a single one left he hammered his shoulder into his opponent's back and sent him spiraling to the grassy ground where the wooden blade found its target inches from the man's neck. The sound of chuckling and a lone applause came from his right and as Alex looked up, his sword lust clearing, he could see his lifelong friend Demetrius staring there, a look of bemusement on his face.

Like I said, something to catch the reader's attention ; )

I usually start one of my stories not with them speaking, but something like...

These days there wasn't much to look forward too. I was stuck in an unending cycle that was slowly destroying me.... ect....

Not the best example but that’s how I start.

I would start mine with a quote. That quote would be "There's no reason to own a car in London".
