You need a permit and definitely experience to keep a hot. Find a mentor and get experience. If you cannot find a mentor I would really suggest you refrain from keeping hots. Go to venomousreptiles.org and read up.

In the state of Indiana, you do need a permit to keep hots, but it is very unlikely you will ever get it. They rarely give permits for hots. I do know this for a fact, as I have a friend that use to breed hots and when they started requiring a permit, he tried to get one and was turned down. The requirements for the permit are very strict. It is easier to get a permit for a tiger.

You really should check with your state and local laws. Most people on Yahoo don't know what a hot snake is, let alone the laws regarding them in Indiana. Here in Texas, no permit is required, but it's up to the city ordinances of the city you live in whether or not you can possess one. I have owned many in the past, but now live in a city which prohibits them.

Here in Florida the permit requires a documented time sheet with someone experienced with hots. For your own protection, even if your state doesn't require it, you should spend some time working with someone who knows what they are doing with venomous reptiles.
Also, you will need to find if there is a vet in your area who treats hots. We are fortunate here in Jacksonville, to have Dr. John Rossi, a renowned reptile vet and author.

yes you need a permit. and I can tell you because i live in indiana that they just dont give the permits out. You can apply for one but youll probly never get it.
And why would you even think of keeping a hot snake if you dont have years of experience.
alot of guys keep hot snakes to be kool and have somthing to talk about.
But ill tell you you dont look kool when your dead . even guys with years of experience will tell you you will get bite sooner or later.

You dont need a permit to own a snake if you can buy them at a pet store. If you found one outside your home that is not poisonous I would assume they are okay to care for if you do not intend to sell it or breed it. That is the only time I believe you need a license to own a snake. As far as experience.... depending on what kind of snake it is, knowing what it eats and what environment it likes is all you need to know.

You mean a venomous snake? Probably -- and you'll need your head examined, too.
