I just finished the mission on GTA San Andreas where you throw boxes of bullets of the train at Ryder in his Truck. Am I very far in the game? How many more missions until more clothes stores open up? How many more until I can gain territory with gang wars?

You're pretty early in the game. Once you finish with Old Grove you go to San Fierro where the game gets a bit more interesting and you're about half-way.
