You've received some good advice so far. I've spent many nights in the Monterey area as I traveled back and forth from the Bay Area to San Luis Obispo where my daughter was in school.

I can't say that I was ever unhappy with any of the places my wife and I stayed - typically for a single night. I usually search out a hotel through the hotel search engine on my site and you may want to try that for a comparison with others.

Consider the Carmel or Seaside areas as well as they are very close to Monterey. And the drive down the coast through Big Sur is worth the effort. Lots of pictures and info about the area on inetours.com

There is a very decent Double Tree Hotel in Monterey (right off of Cannery Row) that is very affordable (particularly if you use priceline.com or a similar discount website).

We have stayed there before and have had great experiences.

Good luck! You might also check out places in Pacific Grove (a small community right outside of central Monterey). I don't know of any specific places there, but it is a beautiful little town!!!!
