I've done the news paper, the kindling, fire lighters, set it going lovely, put the coal on and it still doesn't work. It works for a bit, but not what you'd call a long lasting flame for the evening. It's an open fire, as aposed to the glass shut door type. Maybe I need wood?

I truly hope you are not burning coal in your fireplace! Wood is actually the best source of flame and don't forget to open the vent so the smoke goes up instead of in!

You are speaking of the same type fire as a charcoal grill. Coal does not maintain a flame. You need wood for that.
