Not necessarily. My youngest brother was an "extreme preemie" and is now over six feet tall. Likewise a friend of mine is 6ft.8inches and his son was only 18 inches long at birth. Although genes play a significant role, physical health and/or anomalies, as well as nutrition play a huge roll too.

Not always but sometimes it is a good indication. The thing to remember is that kids grow in fits and starts and not at the same time that others grow. But, my brother who was 6'6" as an adult was as big as a 5 year old at 2 years, I am 6', and I was a very large 3 year old. Then you have my husband who lagged for a long time, shorter and lighter then average until high school where he grew about 4" in one summer to 6' - he's 6' 2".
Probably the best is too look at the parents and figure that the kid will approximate an average of their heights - but this can be misleading also as poor nutrition can stunt children. I have also seen a site that uses height at around age 9 as well as sitting height - how tall you are in the saddle - to predict final height. The BBC article has a link to that website (last link in references).

Nope.
I was 9 pounds at birth, and am 5'4", with small bones.
My son was 9, 1 and 1/2; and is now 5'8", and 150 after weight training.
My sister's son was 5-15, and is now 6 feet tall and about 280.

No... the old wives tale is that they will be twice their height at age two. So, if they are two foot 10 inches on their second birthday, they will be five foot 8 inches tall in adulthood.

no, usually the height of mom and dad will determine how tall the child MAY be. for instance. I'm 5'3 , my oldest daughter's father is 6'4. Her pediatrician averaged her adult height at being between 5'8 and 5'10 inches tall.

my cousin was always really really small. short and chuby and it seems like it happened all of a sudden. we saw him and he was 6 feet tall. this tends to happen a lot a lot in my family, small as babys huge as adults. my little brother was 3lbs at birth and is 14 now and is 5' 10"

I don't think so!
I have two younger sisters, and both were the same exact weight and length at birth ... one is 5'9" inches & the other is 5'1" ... so it hasn't been that way in my family! =]
