Once you prime it, you can use oils or acrylics (both are long lasting.) Might be cheaper for you to go with pints of wall paints, rather than tubes of "artistic" paints. I'd recommend sticking with something you're familiar with, too. For example, I prefer acrylics, so I wouldn't decide to do a mural in oils.

Any acrylic paints would be good. I always check at the hardware and paint stores in the "oops" department. They will mix something for someone and if it gets return they sell it really cheep $2.00 to $3.00 a gallon. I buy them if the color looks like something I might use and I always have paint on hand when I need it. Be sure the wall is clean and maybe even use a primer. If the wall was acrylic house paint you should have not problems, but if it is an enamel you will definitely need to get some help because you acrylics will peel off later from enamels.

My biggest one was 5 feet tall and 25 feet long. Was great fun and great addition to my home. Was a big splashing wave. Looked like you would get wet if you sat on the sofa.

Consider doing it on canvas though. If it turns out great you will not be able to take it with you when you move. I had to leave my behind. You can stretch the canvas over stretcher bars and staple on the back and paint around the edges and don't frame it.

I would go with regular latex wall paint mixed with a medium (available in the wall paint dept. also). The medium will make the paint stay wet longer so it will be easy to work with for blending, etc.
