Let's face it; you have a choice to not go to a place that allows smoking.
I can see not allowing smoking in government buildings or other places that everyone has to use and thus those places should be smoke free.
Why ban places that smokers can go?

Moonlight - I would like to first thank you for a civil response.
Where I come from, the smoking / non-smoking places are pretty equal, but they are trying to eliminate all of the places that you can smoke.
As far as employment goes, it is no different than pay or benefits, you keep looking until you find a job that fits your requirements.

Gram - either have him volunteer to smoke outside of the house or divorce him.
You choose to stay in a smoking environment.

Wow, none of these people can figure out that it is their own responsibility to choose not to patronize or work at a place that allows smoking if they don't wish to breath second hand smoke.

Adam - the fundamental right is not to smoke.
The fundamental right is for a private buisness owner to choose what activities he or she allows in that buisness.

In New York state, the problem is that the entrance to every single restaurant or bar is blocked by a gamut of smokers, outside the place because they can no longer smoke inside.
Now, why cant we send them away, to go down the street to smoke INSIDE some other bar or restaurant, and leave us non-smokers alone?
The answer is that the idiots in Albany decided to make ALL bars and restaurants the same, so there are no longer any that the smokers can be banished to! What idiocy.
As in most things, the answer is competition.
Some places attracted business by advertising the fact that they had gone all "non-smoking". That worked. The non-smokers spent their money there. The smokers went elsewhere.
Then, the politicians stepped in, and abolished the distinctions,
so that there is a cloud outside EVERY restauraunt, smoke lingering in every vestibules, and stinky jackets in EVERY coatroom,
.

Let's put this in perspective.
Second hand smoke contains formaldehyde, benzene, ,vinyl chloride, arsenic, ammonia, and cyanide which are all known carcinogens and poisons to the human body. Would you allow 1 person, let alone hundreds of people, to walk into a bar with a vile of the same poisons and release them into the air?
I didn't think so. Anti-smokers patronize and work in these establishments because they have the right to, and because they want to. They also have the right to do so without being poisoned.
So the question isn't why do "Anti-Smokers" patronize these places, the question is; Why do smokers feel they have the right to poison other people?
EDIT::: You act as though smoking is a fundamental right. It's not. Nobody wants to stop you from smoking, go ahead. But that does not give you the right to poison other people.

And where would all of the places that don't allow smoking be?
Before the ban here, I had never been in a restaurant that didn't allow smoking. It played heck with my asthma. I got to where I couldn't go. Why is it so hard for smokers to smoke outside, then come in and eat?
Same thing in working at these places, how many allowed smoking? Almost all.
What would you say to a person who is trying to find work and told you that they had turned down several jobs because they didn't want to be around the smoke?
Think about it.

I am a non smoker and my husband is a smoker. I do not work and I understand why they complain. It gives non smokers headaches that last for days, it stinks, and it is disgusting. They work at those places because that is all they know. My smoking husband agrees that smoking in restaurants is disgusting and rude. We do not want to smell that while we are eating. Smokers should refrain until they leave the restaurants. Let the people enjoy their meal. Just because YOU choose to smoke does not mean WE have to eat around it or work around it. We have just as much right to breath clean air as you have the right to smoke. Get over it...Get use to it...or stay home yourself!!!

i'm not a smoker, but i acknowledge that the risks associated with second hand smoke are greatly exaggerated and are insignificant in comparison to smoking first hand.
i'd still rather have bars and restaraunts not allow smoking, but its not like Americans today are predominantly chain smokers like they used to be. i dont know, my views are mixed actually. but as far as working environment goes - everyone has the right to work anywhere with certain standards for health and safety, especially if bars and restaurants are the best places for you to work.

Because they have conflicting values. One may need to work at a less-than-perfect place in order to have an income. One may not want to walk another block in the rain to find a non-smoking place. Also, it is human nature to whine. Some would whine because they had nothing to whine about. Everyone whines about one or the other of the two major political parties but would not vote to have just one party if they could.....

"Keep looking until you find the job that meets your requirements?"
I don't know where you live, but in my area beggers can't be choosers.
Some people can't turn down jobs, regardless of what it may do to our health or well-being.
I didn't know that voicing concerns for my health meant I was whining.
What you do in your car, home, outside is your business.
However, inside a building, restaurant, bar, anyplace that has an impact on other people and THEIR health, then it becomes everyone's concern.

Smokers suck. In more than the literal sense. Dirty, filthy, nasty people. And anyone that throws a butt on the ground should be caned.
