...the thought that you will "get even" with the person -- those are interesting words "get EVEN" -- which to me means you don't really settle the score, you just "even things out" by doing a bad deed for another bad deed.

It usually leaves a bad taste in my mouth and soul -- and I TRY to stand back and let things like that pass by me -- one Hour, maybe even one MINUTe from now there will be other more important things that I will have to deal with.

The idea that by getting your revenge you will also achieve closure. Which is rarely true when all is said and done.

Basic monkey instinct. A monkey gets slapped, he wants to slap the slapping monkey.

well if someone hurt you, you naturally want to make them feel what you felt. so, revenge. it may not be good but it's logical.

It's effective. Somebody burns you,you burn them back,they don't bother you again. They got hurt. Basically,they hurt themselves. So they've learned their lesson. It's better for you too,psychologically; as the Irish used to say "Don't get mad,get even".
