It means did you pleaded guilty to something in the categories of felony or misdemeanor, or was you found guilty of a felony or misdemeanor. You know when you go to court and say I did it. Or the judge tells you, you did it. Then they either give you probation, fine or time in jail.

You would know if you'd been convicted of a felony. It is one thing to be charged with a felony. If you're charged & not convicted then you don't have to report it on a job application. There are several professions that prohibit hiring someone with a felony (daycare, teaching, etc.). There are also different classes of felonies. Usually a felony automatically requires you spend some amount of time of jail.
The legal definition of a felony according to http://www.nolo.com/definition.cfm/term/995A46E4-7FE5-4CEE-8AB42986D38D0F26
felony
A serious crime (contrasted with misdemeanors and infractions, less serious crimes), usually punishable by a prison term of more than one year or, in some cases, by death. For example, murder, extortion and kidnapping are felonies; a minor fist fight is usually charged as a misdemeanor, and a speeding ticket is generally an infraction.

Actually, several people answered "Its a serious crime that requires 1+ years in jail" and thats actually not always true. I have several friends that have 'felony counts' on their record but have never served a single day in jail. The most common of these offenses is "Date Rape" where the felon (criminal) has to be considered a 'registered sex offender' but does not always mean a jail/prison sentence. Also, certain felonies are not as serious as you think. Writing a check for over $100 without the funds to cover it in your checking account in some states is considered 'felony'. by definition in the dictionary: "One of several grave crimes, such as murder, rape, or burglary, punishable by a more stringent sentence than that given for a misdemeanor"
Just my two cents, but if you aren't sure of what a felony is, chances are quite likely you have nothing you need to report in this area of an application.

If the police arrest you for a crime ,
There are 2 types (misdemeanor , lesser crime )
or felony ( serious ) .
If you had made a court appearance after an arrest ,
You would know for sure if you had a felony .
(unless you were on some mind altering drug , like alcohol )

A felony is a serious crime, one that kind end up with you in prison. They want to know if you have one on your record. They're going to look up your record anyway, so don't lie. If it's been more than seven years, it shouldn't be on your record anymore.

It means exactly what it says. Have you ever been arrested? If so you have to let them know because they will do a background check and find out anyways.
