Ken S- most other countries included in that list have strong liberal values and welfare systems, along with plenty of fatherless homes.

Schools' hands are tied. People freak out about sex education and make a big to-do about schools teaching sex and morality etc. Then it is left up to parents who are a) embarrassed and b) very often misinformed, so kids don't get information from home. Combine this with a culture that glorifies sex as simple and no more consequential than a game of beach volleyball. A culture that doesn't celebrate sexuality as something natural and sacred.

Some of the countries that have the lowest teen pregnancies (Scandinavian countries) don't focus as much on biology (as American sex ed does) and deal a lot more with decision making/pleasure/good choices/morality education that is actually valuable to teens. The attitude toward sex is really different it seems to be accepted as natural (so not shrouded in shame) and fully comprehensive (which we don't do).

I'm not aware of every friggin' survey that has ever been conducted, but I would agree that there is a higher crime rate among Christians than there is among Muslims. But I wouldn't attribute that to beliefs. In my unscientific opinion, I'd guess that that's largely because Muslims have a tendency to chop off the hands or feet of criminals. ----- I'd like to see the research that WellTraveledProg says is out there that leads "a number of psychologists" to arrive at such a conclusion.

Because since the economy is so bad, both parents have to work at least 1 job each, kids are not properly watched, you don't need summer camp or a babysitter after they hit 13, when it is the best time to have camp or some kind of 'babysitting' for them! That is when they get into gangs & get in trouble! So, when hormone laden teens get together, & have no adult supervision, along with very poor sex education, because of the religious right repubs, then THAT is why!

Look at that list closely. Now tell me which country on that list has the highest percentage (by far) of blacks and hispanics.

Now correlate that population of blacks and hispanics with the teens who are getting pregnant.

There's your answer.

Edit: Go ahead and give me all the thumbs down you want, the truth is in the numbers. Black and hispanic teenagers have a massively higher pregnancy rate than whites and orientals, whether you like it or not. And since the USA has a far greater percentage of those ethnicities than all those lily-white European countries, the overall rate is reflective of that.

Well , you're all morons. There are only 26 countries listed in that table. Bangledesh , Brazil , Africa and more have by far the most teenage pregnancies.

Because we're tolerant of it.

Please, do you really think the vast majority of pregnant teens are thinking "Gee, now how the hell did THAT happen?"

Plus, this chart includes 19 year olds... not just school kids. Some of those may be intentional.

Because the GOP (aka NAMBLA) insists that US public sex education consist of abstinence only pledges, and little else. Chalk it up to ultra self-righteous wing conservative religious posturing triumphing over rationality.

inadequate sex-education combined with the puritanical tendencies of America in general and the perception among some of our least educated to equate having children with government subsidies (i.e.- WIC and govt checks)

My guess would be....... lack of sex education

Parents that feel if they give their children access to birth control, theyll have sex, in other countries the approach is.....we arent naive enough to think they wont have sex, so they give them birth control
