This seems to happen a lot with parents who pushed their children into show business careers. Apparently, Lynne wanted to be an entertainer herself but never made it so she pushed Britney. From the time Britney could walk, she was already taking singing and dancing lessons. Her mother was constantly taking her out of school so she could go on auditions. I hate to use the old cliche about not having a childhood but it seems to apply here. Britney didn't spend her childhood doing the kinds of things she really wanted to do but what her mother wanted her to do. As an adult, Britney became estranged from her mother because she now seems to resent having been pushed into a career she may or may not have really wanted. It's not really any different than other stage parents such as Teri Shields or Jaid Barrymore, who also pushed their children into entertainment or modeling careers. Their children, Brooke Shields and Drew Barrymore, also now seem to be estranged from their mothers.
