it's hard to say. a lot of changes have been made in the offseason.
I don't think that Anaheim or Ottawa will get to the Finals this year. They were pretty good last year... but this is definitely not going to be a repeat year.
San Jose, Detroit, Anaheim, and a surprise team will dominate the West. In the East, it'll be New Jersey, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and Ottawa.
Some teams that may surprise are: St. Louis, Philly, Atlanta
Teams that people wish would surprise them: Toronto.
I'm sorry to say that Toronto will not win the cup this year. Playoffs... maybe. The Cup..... nope sorry. They need to bulk up the team. Sure, they have Sundin and Kaberle, as well as strong goaltending with Vesa. But, they don't have the talent (or the age) to win it all.
Looks like it's the sharks this year. Nabby is a very good goalie. Players like Michalek, Cheechoo, Thornton, Marleau, Pavelski.... they'll help this team. There is a lot of depth in the team. They're mostly homegrown. With the addition of Roenick, they'll have some veteran leadership in the locker room filled with young guys. So.. Sharks this year.

I'm going to say Pittsburgh or Ottawa versus Anaheim.
San Jose is going to have problems without Toskala I think; Nabokov won't be able to hold up for 82 games and they have no one in backup; just some minor league goalies who have never even played a game in the NHL before... by the time they make it to the playoffs he'll be dead on his feet and they'll be tying his arms to the posts to keep him standing.
Vancouver changed nothing; their entire strategy is to pray for a miracle from their offense who were useless last year... It is not a Stanley Cup strategy to hope that Luongo will hold the games 0-0 until the 2nd or 3rd overtime period over and over so that eventually one of the Sedins or Naslund might finally get around to scoring.
Detroit will compete as always; but probably get knocked out by a lower seed that they would have destroyed in regular season play...
I'm somehow expecting the Rangers and Thrashers to do well like last season but not have enough depth to get to the playoffs when some part of their team proves lacking...
New Jersey and Buffalo will decline... these are both teams that had their time in the sun and will slowly deteriorate until they choose to go through a year or two of rebuilding.
I wouldn't know what to make of Nashville or Tampa Bay... two otherwise decent teams... that just somehow don't seem to have what it takes... not sure what either of them needs really, I just know its missing.
Edit: Lmao at the person who said St Louis... Toronto has a better chance...

It's been years since any one team dominated the league and I don't see it happening this year.
Having said that, I think there are some very strong teams out west in San Jose, Anaheim, Vancouver, Calgary, Colorado, and Detroit as well as a couple of very strong teams in the East with Ottawa, and the Rangers.
However, as we all know, anything can happen once the players step on the ice, so I shall wait until the season starts before passing anymore judgement.

Edmonton Oilers in the early 80's with Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Paul Coffey and Jari Kurri. Most offensively explosive hockey teams of all time.

the rangers if chemistry works, the Avs., and surprisingly the caps. Nylander and semin have great chemistry which will probably result in Backstrom being pushed to the second line wing, and when you have a first line with Ovechkin on it that makes for a pretty intimidating top two lines. also the checking line will probably consist of Matt Pettinger a former 20 goal scorer, Chris Clark a 30 goal scorer, and Boyd Gordon one of the most under rated defensive forwards in the NHL. looks pretty intimidating to me.

New York will be pretty good but their no name defense will kill them. The Avs have improved a lot and the Red Wings will have another great season. I am going to say the Red Wings are the most deadly.

I'm looking at the Ducks to beat everyone up physically. I still think the Canucks are going to finally pull off the coup de grace and end the Canadian drought.

"Toronto is an unacceptable answer"? You said "most deadly," and they try to kill more players than any other team.
Of course, the Rangers could be deadly, since the stink they produce could kill somebody.

You can only rightfully ask this question 2-3 weeks into the season. No one is a sorcerer or a fortune teller here.
