Because in this day and age, we all take for granted that things work out of the box, and that if it doesn't work we throw it away and get a new one.
No one expects to have to put anything in, only to use things until they fail. Then blame the manufacturer for shoddy build quality.

It beggars belief that some folk can buy a car costing tens of thousands, which will lose thousands in its first few years, while often basing their decision on what car to buy on a few mpg worth of fuel costs, then be so careless and tight when it comes to maintainance. How reliable a car is usually depends on how well it's looked after, and the quality of replacement components, but too many folk seem to wait until something breaks completely, or the car fails its MOT, before they spend a penny on it.

I agree, it would be much better if people read the documentation first, but, I have to admit that has always been the last reort for me!
