I would think it means having a doctorate, multiple degrees or educated at a prestigious university.

For many people, having a degree or a post graduate to be specific means "well educated"
well you see in many educationtal systems around the world people can get a degree and still fall short when it comes to problem solving, planning and process tailoring in their work environment. People with degrees are also the cliche for emotionally handicapped and socially challenged individuals, no matter what reality may be.

So becoming well educated is a process that start at an early age, where the child has to develop an understanding of the purpose of education, and as he/she gets older expand his understanding of the different situations that life throw at him relatively to the environment they live in and aquire the behavioral features and understanding to deal with them.

That's, for me what it means to be well educated and a degree is the most likely tool to get there.

By most accounts here I am uneducated since I left school at age 14yrs. That's interesting because I'm a prolific reader, I can string more than a few words together to formulate an *educated* opinion on a wide variety of subjects and I have learned more in my travels and life experience than many of my college educated friends.
I'm certainly not a genuis but I'd say I'm well-educated :o)

When I left school very few middle class people went on to University and even fewer females, so I was well educated as far as it went, I attended Grammar School and took GCSEs at 'O' level and 'A' level and obtained good grades. I studied throughout my working life and have several Certificates, Diplomas and also a BTEC National to my name, I would therefore consider myself to be well educated as my knowledge base is quite wide. The purpose of telling you this is not to blow my own trumpet but to say I do not have one iota of common sense!! Sometimes education doesn't stand you in good stead after all!

We all have different definitions of what well educated mean and what not but in my book, it means someone who has received enough education and really learn how to think. You can go to college, spend four years there, party all the time, study a lot, and get nothing out of it. A lot of people do that and I do'nt think it's well educated even though they've gone to school. IF you learn how to use the tools necessary in schoool and learn to exercise your brain and be a well rounded person, that to me, is well educated.

My standard of "well-educated" has nothing to do with school. Though I think proper schooling is what makes this world go round, being well-educated means having substantial knowledge on a variety of subjects and being able to give educated opinions on world events. But that is just what I think.

To me, it means to have a broad knowledge of all kinds of subjects, not just one or two. It means you can think critically and come up with different reasons of why something happened or how it can happen. Learning facts through memorization and being able to spit them out so you can do well on tests is not my idea of being well-educated.

Someone who paid attention is school and is wiser for it - Able to hold an intelligent convarsation without resorting to insults of anger. Not everyone who went to college is well educated, just like not everyone who only finished high school isn't. It is a matter of knowing about the world and what makes it up and the ability to do something with that knowledge.

Too me it doesn't necessarily mean college degree. I know a lot of college degreed people that are just dumb and I know plenty of people that I would describe as "well educated" that has never stepped foot in a university. But most people tend to use it to mean college degreed by a good university, not just any run of the mill college.

Being able to form proper sentences with correct spelling for one thing, and, unlike some Big Brother contestants, knowing the difference between Shakespeare and Spielberg.
