They no longer have any "rights" to you once you turn 18. Remember, however, this means they have no OBLIGATIONS either.

Not sure what state you are from, but in California the legal age is 18. So after 18, you are legally separated from your parents.

They don't have any parental rights after the child turns 18, so no legal separation is necessary.

In the US...at 18, you're a legal adult. Therefore, they no longer have parental rights over you. So what 'rights' are you wanting to terminate?

you people are missing the point... in post 9/11 society your family's actions can prevent you from getting government jobs and a whole host of other goodies. You may not have spoken to them in 20 years but if one of them flies to Yopswitchistan and blows up a train, you can kiss your chance of becoming president or running for congress once they so a security background check on you which includes your legal family... it is sometimes necessary to legally ditch them even after you're 18. It is possible to do so btw.

But they don't have rights, unless they are still your legal guardians. If this is the case, you'd have to find someone else and get them to be legally appointed as your guardian. But in general, unless you are unable to take care of yourself, once you're 18 you can cut your parents out of your life.

After 18, they don't have any rights. You are legally an adult. You never have to speak to them again if you don't want to.

In most states, for most purposes, once you turn 18 you are an adult. If you don't like whatever's happening at home and you're over 18, move out.

They no longer have rights after you turn 18, but they are also no longer under any obligation.
