The periodic table is in order of atomi NUMBER which is the number of protons in the nucleus (neutrons don't come into it).
Atomic WEIGHT is the number of protons AND neutrons in the nucleus. The number of neutrons is teh same or more as the number of protons (the exception to this is Hydrogen^1) and varying numbers of [rotons gives rise to isotopes. Thusit happens that atoms with the sa,e atomic weight can have different atomic numbers. hence the order in that of atomic number.

It's the atomic number. This is the number of protons (positive charge) and neutrons (no charge) in the nucleus of an atom.

Atomic number, but what's so "modern" about it? Mendeleev published the first in 1869. Since then people have just added elements or filled in the gaps.

Atomic numbers. Mendeleyev originally used increasing atomic weights, but there are some discrepancies when you do that. So now it's atomic numbers (numbers of nuclear protons).
