Geckos are small to average sized lizards belonging to the family Gekkonidae which are found in warm climates throughout the world. Geckos are unique among lizards in their vocalizations, making chirping sounds in social interactions with other geckos. The name stems from the Malay word gekoq, imitiative of its cry.

Gecko lover, since you are obviously stupid and illiterate, I wanted to clear up your inability to read my last answer to your crestie question. I BREED CRESTIES AND I OWN NINE. Now go back to kindergarten and learn to read. And leave helpless animals alone. They deserve better than you. The questions you ask are beyond stupid, are you three years old?
PS, your answer about males versus females was WRONG. Females also often have a bump, but it is far smaller. So your stupidity will cause some people to think females are males. Stop offering advice on an animal you are clueless about. And don't breed them for their sake. And those people who suggest a 10 gallon for a crestie are cruel. ONE SINGLE crestie needs at least a 20 gallon, turned on its side to be tall -- a 40 gallon would be best if you aren't lying about being a"gecko lover" (which you probably are)

Your question is one that I had always pondered myself, until I spent an afternoon at a friend's house. My friend and I were sitting on the patio, talking casually when all of a sudden I heard a strange noise. "Ge-cko. Ge-cko. Ge-cko." I asked my friend what the noise was and he told me that it was one of his pet leopard geckos. So, yes, they are named after the sounds they make. They sound exactly like that, too--- kind of like a frog croaking. "Ge-cko. Ge-cko. Ge-cko."

Wikipedia also states why they are named Gecko:
"Geckos are unique among lizards in their vocalizations, making chirping sounds in social interactions with other geckos. The name stems from the Malay word gekoq, imitiative of its cry."
