My girlfriend is staying at my house, and she is very heavily pregnant. What do I do if she goes into labor, or needs a C-Section?

Call her obgyn or mid wife, and take her to the hospital that ob practices at. If its a first child it will probally take a while before the baby is born. She should have a bag with some clothes packed for her and to take the baby home in for when the time comes. A car seat should be installed just to get it out of the way ad the hospital won't let you take the baby home if you don't have one. Also if her water breaks before going to the hospital have a garbage bag to cover the car seat and LOTS of towels. It could be a trickle or a big gush. When mine broke the doctor broke it, but I was astounded at how much water there was. Most of all be compasionate and reasurring.

Go to the kitchen and get a very sharp knife.

OK, maybe not. How about "drive her to the hospital?" And don't speed. You may get into an accident and kill her, the baby, and/or yourself.

BTW - is "heavily pregnant" meaning in or near her 40th week? You may want to be sure that she is really due soon. Time the contractions. Her doc should have told her when the most appropriate time would be to go to the hospital.

Like everyone else says, if she goes into labor, take her to the hospital, if she needs a c-section, make sure you are there for her. If she happens to have a copy of the book what to expect when expecting, there is a section for expectant fathers, and it has tons of info on your role in the L&D room. You might want to check it out. By the way, congrats.

At the first sign of contractions or of her water breaking, call her OB/GYN or midwife, whichever the case may be. He/she will direct you from there. If her water has broken, they will probably tell you to bring her to the hospital as infection can set in once the water breaks if the baby is not delivered within a certain number of hours. If not, they will most likely tell you to start timing her contractions and go to the hospital when they are a certain number of minutes apart - generally anywhere from 10 down to 5 - for a consistent amount of time.

Don't worry......that is what the dr. is there for! He/she is only a call away!!

1st I would make sure she already has a bag packed for the hospital. This way you aren't scrambling around at the last minute trying to grab everything. If her water breaks or she starts feeling contractions, call her doctor and take her to the hospital (preferably call the doctor on the way!)

As for a C-Section, they'll determine that at the hospital if there is an emergency need for it - unless she has one scheduled then she should already know to go to the hospital on that day.

Take her to the hospital dear. There are trained professionals for that type of situation. Usually, there should be no reason why you can't get her there in time. Just watch for signs of labor... water breaking, "cramping" or pains that happen every couple of min and get stronger and stronger. There is nothing wrong with going to the hospital and being sent home...

You should talk to her about it... What does SHE expect of YOU? Does she have an outside support system (a sibling, parent, friend or relative)? She should. If something went wrong- heaven forbid- someone should be allowed to make decisions for her.

But if- and when- the time comes, remain calm and get her to the hospital.

Simple. You take her to the hospital. You can drive her, you don't need to call 911 for an (EXPENSIVE) ambulance ride unless she's bleeding heavily.
You won't know if she needs a c-section, a doctor has to decide that.
