This is almost a universal socio-political truth. If you look at the history of human societies, wealth = power is an invariant. There was a 50 year period after WWII during which a comfortable middle class, with the confidence that came with job security and easy access to health care, formed an influential faction. Those years were an aberration. Power has returned to the rich and super-rich -- look at how they have given themselves huge tax cuts they do not need. And look at how they reward themselves with salaries 300 times that of the average middle class employee. We are back to normality. The nice secure life of your parents and grandparents who were part of the bourgeoisie or petite bourgeoisie are gone forever. It is the children of the petite bourgeoisie who are dying in Iraq to protect the interests of the rich and super-rich factions -- the interests that Alan Greenspan said are Oil, Oil and Oil.
