Just got a cable modem to hook up to the internet yesterday. When it came time to plug in the ethernet cord I noticed my apartment only has the normal phone line plug. I don't have an ethernet plug. Is there something I can buy to plug into the phone line that makes it larger so I can connect the ethernet cord????

O.K. Slow down Bethany! You don't plug the ethernet cord into the wall it goes in your modem and out to your computer or a router. If your modem came with a USB cable and an ethernet cable just use the ethernet cable not both. If it's a cable modem it uses a standard Coax cable which is what you plug into your TV with the little wire in the center and it screws on. If it's a DSL modem then you plug the phone line that it came with into the wall but only if it's a DSL modem. If your computer doesn't have an ethernet port then you need to go buy a USB to Ethernet Card like this:

Good Luck HTH.

The cable modem (not to be confused with a DSL modem) has 4 ports on the back: one for the power cord which goes to an electrical outlet; one for the cable coax which screws into the cable outlet in the wall; a USB port, and the ethernet port (looks like an oversized phone connection) - this cable goes from the modem to the back of your computer.
You will only need to use 3 of these ports at all times.
If you don't have an ethernet on the back of your computer, you should use the USB connection. Of course, you need to make sure you have service activated with your local cable company.

You are very confused.
If you bought a cable modem and do not have Internet service from your cable TV (CATV) provider the modem will not help you.
If your local CATV provider has Internet service you need to subscribe for it (pay for it) and connect the cable modem to the coax cable from the CATV provider. The modem has an RJ 45 port that you connect to your router and to your pcs. Often CATV companies provide the modem but some allow third party marketers as well.
If your phone company provides DSL service, you need to subscribe for it. The cable modem is not used here; a DSL modem is. Usually the phone company provides the DSL modem. The telephone line plugs into the DSL modem. The DSL modem has an RJ 45 port for ethernet feed to your LAN just like CATV does. A router is needed if you have more than 1 pc just as you do if the feed is from CATV.
It sounds like you have not subscribed for the proper service yet.
I presume you have an RJ 45 port on your pc already. If not you can add one.

OK, I'm not sure where you're trying to plug the Ethernet cable into, but it's definitely NOT into the wall, at least not in your case. That cable goes from your modem either to your PC (if you only have one), or to a router if you have more PC's that you're trying to connect. Hope that helps. For more info, please post more details, like what equipment you have and how many.
P.S. It's not a cord, it's a cable.

If you have cable internet, you need to run a coax cable from the wall and screw it into your cable modem.
If you have DSL, it comes through your phone jack into your modem. If you dont have a dsl modem, you will need to get one.
If you are like in a dorm room or something of the like that has high speed wired up in the building, they should have an ethernet jack in the wall. (a bit larger connector than a phone jack)

umm..you plug the cable modem into your cable line. Its a co-axial cable that goes into your TV. you should have a co-axial cable splitter. The ethernet goes from the cable modem into your PC or laptop, not something in the wall!!!

Me thinks you do not have cable at your house that is why you have no ethernet connection.
Who cares who dares?
