I'd rather have the E320, like the 1st poster said, the 525 is for the ghetto folks who can't afford a 530/540 and has no power. I'd be surprised if the E320 less then the 525 though that depends on how much optional crap the person bought.

The question becomes what type of driver you are. If you want sporty handling (and the stiffer ride that comes with it) pick the BMW over the Mercedes. But if you want a bit of refinement, pick the Mercedes.
The 525 engine may be a bit underpowered compared with the E320, but if you usually drive by yourself and do mostly stop and go traffic (ie less motorway and overtaking) I think you may not really notice it.
Also in terms of styling, for some reason Mercs seem to age well with time compared with BMWs (but hey this could be just me) and I'm talking in decades here. An old merc may seem like a graceful old bag which still commands a bit of respect now and again with the three pointed star, whilst an old BMW just seems like a technological tour de force has been. For instance how often do you see old S classes from the 1980s compared with 7 series from the same period.

The E320 is the current model body style still, while the 5 series has been redesigned. The E320 will change in late '09.
The E320 is a very smooth ride, and frankly its more classy.
The gas mileage is good it actually gets 22.5 average. The transmission delivers the torque at the right places, its very quick from 40-70mph.
Peter doesnt know what he's talking about. The E actually comes in several engine configurations, the numbers correlate to the engine size, the letters to the body style.
The 5 series is a little boring to me, id actually prefer a 3 series coupe to a 5 series.

How funny, the answers some have give you. I wonder if they really have owned either. I have owned both and still have 2 Mercedes. BMW are great cars, and you can,(most of the time), get you resale value back. The 525i series, is going to get less gas mileage, and it's also a bigger car. However they are nice. I personally would choose the Mercedes, whatever series it is. They last forever, and have low maintenance, (if taken care of). I just purchased a 320ie for my daughter, (first year at law school), a 2005. I know it's dependable, sturdy, well built, great gas mileage, enough room, 4 door, and IT LOOKS VERY CLASSY!!!!! Anyone who knows anything about Mercedes knows what kind of high performance car they are. Good luck to you. They are both great cars. I favor the Mercedes.

I currently own a 2001 525i, having purchased it to replace a 2002 E320. I prefer the BMW on nearly every level, the only difference being a little less storage space. To me, the interior is much more attractive than the MB, its handling is superior, even though it is RWD and the MB was AWD.Fuel economy appears to be the same. The Bimmer is far more fun to drive.
At this point in time I have 2 Bimmers, the 525i and a 2007 530xi, my next purchase will probably be another BMW.

Neither. spend a little more and get the 530i. The engine in the 525i is underpowered for such a heavy car. That engine was designed for the 3-series anyway.
While I like the E-Class styling better, BMW currently makes a more reliable car even with it's few quirks.

Both cars are very good, but somehow the BMW has a more aggressive styling, it looks modern and sporty. Also the engine is better in the BMW. In general, we have a BMW and a Mercedes, and I like them both, but BMW has convinced me over the years, to be the more dependable car. I have a 2002 540 and this car has amazing performance I will keep it for many more years.
But the important thing is what you like and how the car fits into your lifestyle and finances.
good luck and have fun shopping

I'll take the 525i over the E class. It's not so much the engine, as I believe the 5 series chassis is better than the E chassis. As for engine size. I have a 3.5 litre and it gets about 6 km/l. Having a big engine isn't everything, and you can't use that power all the time. I don't get to many changes to go to 60 is 5 seconds....I don't you where you guys live, but my streets and highways have cars on them, and going fast isn't always possible.
