I am now residing outside of the US and so I cannot, according to ABC, watch my favorite shows. I want to change my IP address so it appears as though I am in the US and I can feel like something is the same in my life when everything is different. I am not computer saavy and I don't want to screw up my present connection, since the internet company here has issues.

Your IP address is assigned to you by whoever you get your internet access from (your ISP).

Your most likely course of action is to find a proxy server based in the US (google for 'proxy' or such).

These IP checks are a pain in the ***, and stop people in the UK (like myself) watching these online clips.

Good luck - wherever you are in the world!

There are several ways to do it. First way is to try a "browsing anonymously" site to where you use their website as a middle-man. Secondly you can try an IP spoofer to where it is supposed to report your IP address as a different address to the website. Lastly, and possibly the easiest, your ISP will reassign your IP address if you take your modem offline for a few hours (most ISPs have a default between 2-4 hours, some may take up to 8).
