I'm trying to help a friend determine if an oversized 1937 3 legged buffalo nickel is worth anything. He got the coin from his father "many years ago." We understand that the 1937 nickel with the 3 legged buffalo is valuable, but can't find any information regarding this larger exact replica. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Without seeing pictures it's very difficult for anyone to give you a good answer. A lot depends on the condition of your coin.

1 - Take your coin to a local coin dealer (trustworthy ones can be found - shop around, get second opinions). It never hurts to get a second opinion. They will be able to tell you so much more by evaluation the condition of the coin. They will also know the amount minted and what it is going for in today's market.

2 - Try posting pictures on this website (there are many experts here that can help you evaluate it - there also may be people willing to buy if you are trying to sell):

3 - Repost this question and include pictures. You can use websites like photobucket.com and include the link in your question.

Good luck!

P.S. Do not clean your coin as this can drastically reduce the value.

The worn Buffalo nickel has little value, people that make coin belt buckels and things pay .25 cents. The 1937 nickel to be a 3 legged variety must have a D mint mark under the word five cents. If not it is a common date and worth .50 cents and up depending on grade (condition). If it has the D then it needs to be seen and then authenticated, take it to a couple of coin dealers or see if a coin club is in your area for they would have some advanced collectors who could tell you. The cent is quite common (1920) and sells for around .05 cents in circulated grades more if in high grade such as all the lines in the wheat ears are there. The two British pennies are common dates and sell for around .25 cents in a coin dealers world coin box.

If it is about 3 inches in diameter then it is one of a group of novelty items that a lot of gift shops have. By the way the 3 legged Buffalo is a 1937-D. The over sized coins come in all the rare coin varieties. I have one that is a high relief Saint Gaudens $20 double eagle. The real thing sold for 2 million in Nov. 2005. I got it a few years back when I visited his studio which is in New Hampshire. it is now run by the park service. They sell for $5 to $10 and can even be found cheaper. At least your friend has a conversation piece.

Thats a novelty "coin". Its not real US currency. I`ve seen those oversize coins at flea markets for a couple dollars each.
