I went to school in the deep south and no, it wasn't officially separated. Black kids, white kids, and other groups tended to naturally section off and gravitate towards each other, and granted, you were seen as a little "strange" if you didn't hang out with people who shared your ethnic background, but no one really bothered you. But, this whole business of white parties, black parties, white proms, black proms, is absolutely unheard of to me. I don't understand. Are we or are we not on the cusp of a new millennium? Why shoot ourselves back into the 1940's? Sad, really, every time I think things are getting better I hear crap like this... Seriously...

My school was not separated but there was always a tension between the two races, you could just feel it. I also grew up in an all black neighborhood so I was constantly jumped by groups of black kids some were very severe and nothing was ever done about it. But you just get over it and move on because not all black people act that way. Plus there is no white Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson, to them white people are the only racists. Its like a one way street.

when i went to high school...it was kind of separated. i went to an all white school and there was a handful of blacks. the white kids were VERY ignorant about our culture. some of them asked questions just to be racists and rude and others were just simply ignorant. one time a white girl asked me "how do you wash your hair?"...im like what? just like you. i live in Texas...so Texas is in its own world with the rest of the south.
we didn't have separate proms or anything like that.
graduated high school in 2002.

i went to a school that was mixed with hispanic (cuban, puerto rican, colombian) and black and white. most people had a tendancey to align themselves with their own ethnic groups. i knew people from different groups and had a diverse group of friends. . i think schools are more segrated not than they were 20 yrs ago when i was in grade school. but i don't think there's a easy fix to the problem.

No. This is what we used to do - it was called "separate but equal" - but was struck down by the Supreme Court in its Brown v. Board of Education case.

No we had blacks in our school, 2 of them.
Both of them were good kids, good students and stars of our athletic teams.
That is more than I can say of many of my fellow white students.

Im from Alabama and there are things that happened like that in the south ALL THE TIME, but this could happen anywhere.maybe you should open your eyes. there are places that I wouldnt even stop and by gas....racism will always exist in my eyes. you just pick your battles, and try to stay calm in bad situations
