At my 20 week ultrasound the baby had the cord between its legs and the doctor said she would say boy if she had to guess but she was not sure.Anyone had a situation like this and the "i think it might be a penis" turned out to be the cord? I have never had an ultrasound with any of my kids where they acted so unsure.

An ultrasound technologist could NEVER confuse an umbilical cord with a penis. They look nothing alike. But, a cord can be laying over the genitals, and can make it where you cannot see the gender. The only way you can safely say that a baby is male is to see the penis and scrotum. The only way you can safely say that a baby is a female is to see the labial lips. If the cord is overlying that area, you can't see what is between the legs.

Here is an image of an umbilical cord. Scroll to figure 4. The lines under the "CD" on the image is the cord:

Now, here is a genital shot of a male fetus. In fact, to the left of the words "boy", you can see the cord :

It wouldnt be "woops it was the cord not a penis" The cord is sooo much thicker than a penis could ever be on a baby, and its unmistakable in an unltrasound. I think what she's trying to say is that what she can tell from the ultrasound, even with the cord in the way, is that it looks like a boy.

That is what happened to me at my 20 week ultra sound. The baby was crossed legged with the cord in "his" lap, and the tech said, I think I see something poking through, so we will say it is a Boy for now. I have to go back at 24 weeks because they need to check my low placenta, so hopefully they will be able to tell for sure. We are calling the baby a "him" until we are told differently!!

Good Luck!

Yep. My baby is coming tomorrow and I was told that he was a boy, but I'm not sure.At my 19 1/2 wk US they had to poke for several mins to get my baby to move his legs, and even then the cord was down there. We have most everything boy, but we really wouldn't mind if we had a girl. We have a girl name picked out just in case, and really have no problem with what we would have to do for a girl. We have just have to pack up everything boy and wait for the next time around.

my baby had his cord between his legs in my last ultrasound, however dr said that you can clearly distinguish the cord from his pp because the cord is like transparent & the pp isn't, so i could see his pp all white & the cord withish & blackish.. hope i helped!!
God Bless

I think that's what happened, he wasn't very friendly (the ultrasound guy) all he said was that he 'thinks' it's a boy.
More waiting to do....

yes its extremely common. get another in a few weeks and it should be easier to determine the sex of the baby.
