I have a macbook, aluminum I think, and the hinges are broken. I've been using it perched against a brace. That has been working fine for a while but now, but I just noticed that the broken hinges have worn at the wiring and I swear I saw it smoke.
Has anyone tried to repair something like this and how much would it cost?
As an alternative, I was thinking I could clip the monitor all together and use a external LCD.

I'm willing to do the repair work myself, it looks like everything is accessible. I am mostly concerned that the parts are expensive.
