All those elements you listed contribute to the self-destruction of our great nation. Once arrogance, avarice and hubris sets in, a civilization collapses, as did the great Greek and Roman empires. Because Americans have gotten 'soft', slothful, selfish and self-centered, they fail to have any compassion for the poor homeless man living on the street, much less the rest of the world.
Alexander Tyler once said: "A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover they can vote themselves largess from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations has been 200 years."
Eisenhower warned us about the giant military-industrial complex. Corporate welfare programs in the form of tax breaks, abatements, grants and bail-outs are the most corrupt and repugnant abuse of government funds. If we can piss away TRILLIONS of dollars on runaway 'war' spending for an immoral and illegal 'war', we can certainly allocate a few hundred billion to help those in our society who are poor, underprivileged, disadvantaged, disabled, homeless, sick, elderly, or hungry. But the "haves" don't want to share with the "have nots', and the evil, corrupt corporate 'sharks' keep circling the political waters to ensure that they get 'fed' first.
Racism, religion, greed, corruption, hubris, arrogance, and a lust for power or control also feeds the self-destruction of our great nation. While there are many who believe it is unpatriotic or "doomsday" attitudes to talk this way, there is a reality that will sooner - rather than later - face this great country. We represent only 5% of the global population, yet we squander 55% of the world's resources. As other nations begin to emerge and want their 'fair share', we will find it impossible to invade sovereign nations (like Iraq) only because we want to steal their oil or other valuable resources. At that time, America will crumble. -RKO- 09/20/07

All of the above. We have people in power who are serving their own interests. This doesn't matter if its democrats or republicans. The main difference is , that the special interests dems usually serve are working class people and the groups that take care of them and the repub. serve the huge corportations and rich people who take care of them, so that in a nutshell is how the leaders are ruining the country. Race is huge too (speaking on the black/white issues only). Black dont understand white and vice versa for the most part. Generally speaking, we are in a viscious cycle...blacks are discriminated against is a given , however many people like al sharpton for instance, use every issue and make it about race and in return, whites look at like the boy crying wolf and now they are sick of hearing about race, even though at times its relevant. An example of this that i see alot in my city is the cops shoot a black man and its seen as racist by the black community and the white community sees it as justice, but it can be a little of both. For instance, not long ago, a black man who was dealing drugs got in an altercation with a white undercover officer and the suspect ended up being shot and killed. It was seen as racist by many blacks, whereas whites said he was a drug dealer and had a weapon and got what he deserved. I think these type of issues will never be solved, unfortunately. Now, i'm not saying that either side is right, just saying , these things continue to perpetuate generalizations about black/white and cause negative feelings on both sides. I think race is in the fabric of our society and we will never totally rid ourselves of racism to some degree, because neither side wants to give in a little to get a good dialogue going...it seems to be them and they instead of all of us working as americans together.

Of the choices given above, to me the main culprit is greed. The love of money is the root of all evil just as the good book says. And the love of money has been the cause for trouble in all of the other categories, including religion. Money in politics has brought us to making choices between the lesser of two evils and scandal after scandal of corrupt politicians. Money as a social status definitely divides the races, not just the disparity between black, white, and mexicans but between the haves and the have-nots. Money therefore is the greatest obstacle this world has to face....or the love of it anyway.

Fanaticism on *both* sides. Domestic terrorism - either from the anti-abortion nuts or the animal rights nuts or the environmental nuts - is going to destroy our country. When are the moderates going to take a stand against these idiots?!?
I have already. I got the FBI involved in a local case where an animal rights group was harassing the hell out of local law-abiding trapper *and* his family.
While I don't agree with automatic weapons at all, I *am* trying to get our state legislature to pass a Hunters Bill of Rights, protecting law-abiding Alaskans from these nuts.
Just think what the moderates could do if we quit being complacent!

People inside this country who are giving aid and comfort to the enemy. Let me explain. There are many people who simply do not like President Bush. And that is how we should properly address him. Not Bush, no Dubya. He is President of the United States of America. People may not like it, and people may not like him, but I teach my children to respect those in authority, whether they like the person or not. Many others have not learned that.
Our enemies, (terrorists, for example), get emboldened when they see prominent citizens like celebrities and talk-show hosts bashing the war in Iraq and the President. We seem to have more domestic enemies than foreign ones. If we continue this trend, America will self-destruct from the inside out.

conceitedness, avarice and hubris has set in....and, merely because it destroyed the super Greek and Roman empires, it is going to easily as unquestionably destroy u.s.. as quickly as any society reaches a factor the place it believes itself to be extra advantageous and lavish, it is going to become slothful, grasping, amoral and egocentric. extra in what we devour and how we fulfill our gluttonous loss of morality and compassion is what is going to tear away on the very fabric of our nationwide community. Alexander Tyler alluded to it skillfully: "A democracy won't be able to exist as an enduring variety of government. it could in user-friendly terms exist till the electorate hit upon they might vote themselves largess from the wide-unfold public treasury. From that 2d on, maximum individuals continually votes for the applicants promising the main income from the wide-unfold public treasury with the end result that a democracy continually collapses over unfastened economic coverage accompanied by a dictatorship." Tyler additionally suggested that "the common age of the international's maximum appropriate civilizations has been 2 hundred years." we are close to to self-destruction. -RKO- 11/06/07

Corruption is the #1 for sure. But I think the far right & far left of both political parties are doing irreparable damage equally, by eroding our constituional rights in the name of freedom or health.

Other.
No matter who runs our Country, democrats or republicans, the bottom line is there's a huge break-down in trust, honor and respect.
Why? History has shown us why our government shields the truth from us. Fear. Their fear of a fallout by the people.
Every day government is losing respect from its Citizens.

Socialism. I think that is the single most dangerous venom that is poisoning our great nation.
If you've never read about Rugged Individualism, it's what this country was founded and built upon. Socialism is the antithesis to Rugged Individualism. All sights that offer information on Socialism state that it is a step in the progression from capitalism to communism.
We need to get it out of our country.
Other than that, I'd say illegal aliens.
