So I just started feeding my baby cereal... which i know is supposed to help the baby eat less. But I feed him cereal twice a day... once in the morning and once before he goes to bed. But he still wants to eat every 2 hours, 8 oz. each feeding. I know he's hungry, not a diaper change or just wanting something to suck on. He makes it very clear when he's hungry and when it's something else. He was born big (9lbs. 11oz.) and he now weighs 13lbs 12oz. and he's always had a big appetite but still eating every 2 hrs after cereal seems like alot.

My doctor gave the go ahead on solids now... 4 months is typical to start, it's ok for their digestion by then. I went to school for early childhood and I do know that much, so please no one give me a hard time for feeding him cereal. Manypeople give cereal in the bottle at 2months, I've waited till he was 4 months.

We too had several children that were over 9 pounds at birth, and they would eat about every two to three hours. We were rather concerned about this with the first baby and seen the doctor, he did recommend a change in formula. If you are breast feeding you may need to add a formula supplement in between feedings. And it's not going to hurt if you feed the baby 10oz at a time. As for the cereal he really isn't old enough for his digestive tract to start digesting complex cereals. This will only lead to constipation. 6 month is the recommended age to start with cereal or soft #1 baby foods.
You can also check with the doctor about adding a liquid vitamin to his milk, or giving the baby 2% milk inbetween the formula feedings. You have to take into account that this baby is well above the average infant so it's hard to guage the correct amount. Never fear though you can't over feed an infant, once their little bellies are full they will quite eating, unlike us adults which has to unfasten are pants and lay in misery for hours after gorging ourself.
Well I hope this help and Congratulations on the Baby!

The cereal does have iron and other nutrients that he needs, but the formula or breast milk is still his main source of nutrients. Don't worry about how much of that he's getting, the more you introduce solids he'll naturally want less of the formula or breastmilk.
I would introduce all three cereals, in a three week span ... three times a day. Breakfast, lunch & dinner.
Then when you've gone through that you can feed cereal for breakfast & lunch and introduce a veggie for dinner and continue like that.
Eventually it will be cereal for breakfast followed or accompanied by fruit, lunch of beef & veggies followed by custard and cookie and dinner of chicken, rice & veggies followed by fruit and yogourt ... if he's still wanting to eat that much breastmilk or formula then start introducing some snacks, my doctor suggested three a day ... the third being cereal before bedtime. By then he should definately be drinking less bottles or breast.
Good luck!

back before their were baby doctors.. moms had to do what they could to have the baby happy. and not so hungry.. my mom started feeding my kids table food like gravy and soups.and homemade mash potatoes. feel what is rite and do it.. he knows when he is full, because he'll start spitting the food out.. the baby cereal is fine and I wished my sisterinlaw would have listened to me when my nephew was at that stage..like your boy,, he was born 9 - 10 lbs.. She was like some of the others always listening to the doctors.. during the day every 2- 4 hrs give him some cereal and the juice and water. not all the milk.. mixx the cereal with his formula in his bottle is fine..a teaspoon in every four ounces is fine. or a tsp in water same four ounces.. just work with him and he'll let you know when he doesnt want or like something..

from my experience, i would feed cereal in the morning and at supper time. but he should be drinking pretty much the same amount of milk, or a little less. My son used to eat 2 small bowls of cereal (1 morning, 1 late-afternoon-supper time) and would still drink 4 to 5 bottles of 10oz. I started giving him fruits at first before the veggies, as it is easier to digest for his little stomach. Around 6 months old, i started giving him plain toast for lunch and that would help him drink less. Make sure you give ur baby alot of water (juice is bad for cavities and he wont want to drink water if u start giving juice so young). babies tend to cry the same way when they are thirsty for milk or water. dont let him drink more than 4 to 5 bottles per day and keep him hydrated and vary those cereal flavours for stage 1.
to comment the answer above (Alana); my doctor made me start feeding my son cereal at 2 months old as he was drinking over 5 bottles of 50oz per day and wasn't a fat baby. his dad, as a baby, had to start eating cereal around that age as well. cereal are now made easy to digest and should have no harm on ur baby. ask ur doctor if ur not sure.

A 4-month-old weighing 14 pounds needs 28-32 ounces.
Nevertheless, these are general guidelines. In real life, this may vary quite a bit from day to day and from baby to baby.
A baby can breastfeed as much as he wants, or have 20 to 32 ounces of formula per day. In addition, he can have as much or as little in the way of solids he wants to supplement this.
Thankfully, babies are born with a sophisticated internal mechanism for determining just how much they need to thrive. Healthy babies given the right selection of healthy foods will tend to eat just the right amount.

Stand by basics!!!!! cut cereal portion into 3x per day. Don't add more, more, more! Remember you are the mother. It's very had to be stearn w/baby. Put a picture in your head of baby birds in a nest, every time the nest moves for any reason babies start to holler. Basic 4hrs. apart to feed, including night shift. No cereal at night. Soon baby will sleep through the night, don't panic, it comes naturally! Good Feeding.

That is a good sign but during the day when you make him bottles use half water so that he will learn that when he gets hungry he will eat not that he will eat every 2 hours lol.
