I have a friend who has the mindset of "I'm my own person and nothing I do is influenced by 'society' or what 'society' says I should do or think." Granted, not a bad philosophy. But by rebelling against authority or society isn't a person just joining another group of society? Therefore not being any different at all really than anyone else. And by trying so hard NOT to be like something, you're showing you do care what other people think, otherwise you would just live and do what comes natural to you instead of constantly trying to be or not to be something. I don't think a person can not be formed by the society they live in. There is no way a person born in America is going to be the same as someone born in a third world country. It's what we're surrounded by that makes us who we are. And the real question I guess is, is that so bad? I think the people who are truly themselves don't try to be anything, they just be. It's like the goth southpark episode.

I guess in short what I'm saying is that by not 'conforming' to one thing you're just conforming to another. So there isn't really such a thing as "Non Conformists." The real non conformists live in the mountains and are people usually refered to as the wierdo that lives in the mountains. Those are the real non conformists.

so the real non-conformists are the crazy hermits! lol

that just might be true...

one doesn't Need to try so hard to be themselves and be comfortable in their own shoes..

I don't know if that should necessarily be labeled "non-conformism"..

If we really want to get technical we can say.. if your 'society' is what made you decide to go against it, then it's 'society' that has helped shape what you've become..

Ted Kaczynski, the UNABOMBER, was a non-conformist.

You can be individual without being completely crazy. Just be confident in your own opinions, weigh your judgments carefully, and stand by your morals.

The very lack of people with strong, admirable convictions in today's society is alarming.

I think you're right.....by refusing one (or more) groups, you're just joining another. Like the old Rush song...'when you choose not to decide, you have still made a choice'.
