"He was always so quiet..."
Social abnormalities may be indicative of mental problems, as these people would tend to deviate from the norm and not be accepted, or shun human interaction because of their own feelings of abnormality. However, people who have social difficulties are not the only ones who commit violent crimes. I'm not sure that anti-social criminals are that much more difficult to investigate, either.

Not all were, but a lot were. Here are some that weren't, off the top of my head.
Paul Bernardo, Karla Homolka ( Ken and Barbie Killers )
Ted Bundy
O.J. Simpson (debate all you want)
This is a really tough question to answer. Loneliness begat frustration begat depression begat anger begat need....and need begat longing begat taking....etc....etc...etc...
Basically, there are a lot of factors that can lead to these things. In most cases they just seek power which spawned from lack of self confidence and lack of positive influence or reinforcement. If you only get attention when you do something wrong, that is how you are going to get your attention.
Why is it difficult to investigate? I am not sure if you are asking why they are hard to catch or why the actual reasons are hard to investigate.

wow where to start, ok let me say i am no expert but heres what i know (bare with me i'm still learning) i think what you are calling "socially withdrawn" is really detachment. If you cannot sympathize or relate to the human experience wouldn't it make it that much easier to squash it out (like say killing a spider, you dont relate to the spider's experience you only know it within your experience as a human being bit). I know plenty of "loners" who aren't violent & most serial killers when you talk to their neighbors or families say things like "joe bob was a real nice guy" Also i would think if your life was consumed by trying to gain pleasure thru violence that you wouldn't really have time for hanging out and you couldn't let anyone get too close but that doesn't mean you weren't capable of having friends (as long as you hid everything you were) & look at Ted Bundy, he was charming...people trusted him & that he used to his advantage. so there it is, i tried not to be too long winded but this is just too fascinating a subject

You're over complicating this:
Violent people would have lots of friends except for the fact that people don't like being around people who tend to do them harm. How long would you be friends with someone who was prone to beating you up?
These people are withdrawn and friendless because their violent and aggressive tendencies make people shun them.

Socially withdrawn people spend a lot of time thinking and conjuring ideas.
But sometime they overcome their inward tendencies.

Public humiliation for first time offenders, like being put in the shares, or compelled to parade down the line bare. *Edit* Oh you stated violent criminals, for the very low point ones on first offense the above.

It is possible that their childhood or other part of life holds a nightmare of child abuse, molestation, other horrific things. Those things can turn an otherwise normal mind into some serious psychological problems.

Well, it depends which came first, the violence or loss of friends. The former expalins the latter.
