I'm just using two extremes as a cautionary example because there is a general extreme left vs. extreme right environment ruled by the Democrats (left) and Republicans (right).

Extreme Left: leans towards socialist and communist ideals.
Extreme Right: leans towards corporatist and fascist ideals.

I think that the problem is compromise. Unless a strong ideology one way or the other takes over among ordinary citizens (unlikely I think), the two ends of the spectrum give the other concessions on their agenda. This is how they come to tell us that we can have both "guns and butter".

What does this look like? Personally, I think that the pull is stronger toward corportism. The people currently possessing wealth will shape the rules of the game. However, to keep the ordinary person satisfied, socialistic programs are mixed in. While the former gives temporary material advantages to the wealthy, the later gives mostly just apparent benefits to the commoners. The end result of both though is that economy is hampered. Wealth is destroyed.

A society ruled by either ideal will fail. One ruled in part by both will cave in upon itself.

To answer your second question, presidential candidate Ron Paul is the brightest hope for averting disaster.

Edit: My opinion of Ron Paul is very high. However, I'd like to add that common citizens must reject both extremes. Someone espousing either philosophy can only rule as long as common people consent to quietly paying their taxes and assenting to what the rulers do. I do think that Ron Paul understands this. This is why he has taken to thanking his supporters for allowing him to join the revolution.

As bitter as the liberal/conservative divide has become in the US, there still isn't all that much difference between the parties. There aren't going to be any socialists running for president (and maybe one in Congress) who really expect to win. And I think the republicans are learning their lesson about fascism, I don't think they'll blindly support their leadership in the near future again. But when it comes down to it, neither party is trying to make any huge changes to the country--just a few little fixes to make things run more smoothly.

I'd like it if the extremists had more of a say in government. While most of the time extremists are deservedly ignored and would continue to be disregarded, any revolutionary change will start with their ideas.

I hope Democracy prevails but there's a bigger chance of America becomming even more far right.

What's considered moderate in America is right wing.
Someone like An Coulter and all the radio wackos are so far right it's scary and disgusting. There's no one like that on the left but the regressive right succeeded in part to say or act like Michael Moore or Rosie O Donnell are the same on the left. That's bull. They call to hang Democratic traitors meaning congressmen and senators and that's their free speech but Move on should be kicked out of the country for a factual ad that makes one reference to betraying in thr form of a question
There is hardly a real far left in America and there's no far left wing in the Democratic party.Kucinich and Gravel and some others are definitely left but the right has succeeded in marking them as far left while they are not.
Most of the Democratic party is moderate,a lot right of center but the right succeeds in making too many people think they are communists.

On so many issue's the right controls the language of the debate and therefore the debate itself.A lot of liberals use their language and fall into their logic.
It's gonna be very hard for the left to change that.Their low taxes scam works. It's a scam.Americans don't accept tax cos it's their money but they do accept working overtime for nope. That's theft but they don't see the relation.Do you?If you work fifteen hours and only get payed eight. In America that's legal and it was passed without strikes or any protest. But try to raise a tax a little and people scream and are outraged. The right controls America including a lot of people who think they are liberal.
The money "wasted" on welfare is peanuts compared to the military spending. Most welfare recipients aren't lazy bums.Still a majority of Americans think they are.The military spending is often very wasteful but no one cares or only a few who are immediately branded as far left.

Communism is a far-left doctrine whose basis is economic equality for all (except the elite in power), while Fascism is usually a method that relies more on extensive use of military and police to impose order and induce terror.

Most Communist regimes are also fascist states. Consider the Soviet Union who subscribed to communist ideals and used fascism to support that.

The American people who will stand up against oppressive tyrants like the Declaration of Independence said. These are the ones guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment of the US Constitution that says people have the right to be armed to protect themselves against criminals or tyrants or both at the same time. They are the ones who first vote to preserve their rights by getting idiots out of Congress who would with the stroke of a pen in a secret committee meeting or on the floor of Congress vote to end the freedom spoken of in the Constitution. Then when their voting doesn't prevail, they defend their rights when the storm troopers come. If people hadn't been disarmed, Adolph Hitler, Joseph Stalin and Mao Zedong never could have killed the millions of their own people that they did.

Actually the extreme right does not lean towards fascist ideals, it leans towards Anarcho-Capitalism.

Of course, the problem is that the entire market place of ideals is not a failed institution of France. They do not exist on a spectrum of that ridiculous level of dichotomy. It's not even a sustainable way of classifying ideas. Three rights make a left!

Try analysing ideals on their actual merits rather than their classification on an arbitrary scale.

The people ask for bigotry on both sides, and the government, being a democratic republic, obliges happily. You don't have to worry about fascism, communism or anarcho-capitalism though. The government isn't competent enough for that.

Actually, Republicans pretty much equals Facist, AND Democrats pretty much equals Communist. We really need to replace those Parties with he Libertarian and American Independent. Parties. Of course, it'd be just a matter of time before THEY were taken over too, but at least we'd get a breather!

america is fascist. our country is either fulfilling or on the fast track to fulfilling every point of the definition. most "ultra conservatives" in america spew fascism and seem completely unaware that the ideology that they believe so deeply in, is in fact fascism. keep in mind that many governments that we typically refer to as fascist do or did not admit to being fascist, even though they were in the very meaning of the word. therefore just because someone denies being something, doesnt mean they arent, actions speak louder.

No. We will continue along as we always have... scrimmaging around the 50 yard line. 5 yards here. 5 yards there. No radical swings in store. Believe it or not, these aren't either the worst of times or the best of times. The great American middle (the ones that don't show up here, but do on election day) always balance out the extremists and hotheads.

A great moderate could save us but the problem is that many of the moderates in this country don't vote or don't think before they do. Unfortunately, extremists tend to vote, so they're the ones with all the power.

The USA will eventually go the way of Rome.
