We (all 9 families on our street) have wells dug on our properties. The city water comes to the highway about 1.5 miles away from our homes. Where do I start in getting the service to be placed down our road?

Where I live you have to pay the utility company to run the water lines and place a meter. If all 9 families are will to share the costs it my not be to bad. Then you have to pay a plumber to run the water lines from the meter to the house. Contact your utility company.

Contact your local water provider they will more than likely send someone out to measure distance and figure a cost for a line extension. This will normally include cost of the line plus engineering will have to be paid up front to figure the hydraulics to see if water can even get to you by elevation. After that if all 9 houses want water the water utility might give a company contribution for each paid connection before or during time of construction. This could significantly reduce the price of the line. Or the water company might run it for free if there is enough interest or the possibility of more customers is there. Just something to think about when contacting the water company.

The first thing that I would do is to go to the Counselmans meeting. State your request to them. This should include the reason that you would want to get from FREE private wells. To PAYED public water. You also don't just pay for water you pay a sewer charge as well. it can be pretty expensice to be on public water.
Why would you want to change from private wells. Get a water sample kit from your health dept. Take the sample back to them. Of course this will cost you. Everything does. See if the welll water is safe.. If it just needsd disinfectant than get the right number of Chlorine tablets from a well driller and drop them down the well tube. Make sure you put the top back on scurely. The water may taste chlorene for a few days. Try using a filter. If alll else fails call the town and tell them you need the health officer to investigate. Once he/she does this than go to the state level of health depatment They should be able to get you an answer in a day or do. Sometimes the problem is small. Sulphur in water will give a rotten egg smell and a bad taste to water. Water supply companies can tell you your problem. Be careful they are in business of selling water suppies. Keep it simple.

You need to get all involved parties to agree with paying the assessment for running the line. You would be responsible for having the line from the main to the house installed. It may get sticky if all of you are on septics also. While running the water lines, they may opt for also installing sewer lines at your expense. When I lived in Florida, there was a private company that owned a "city" waterline. The connecting to this line was very expensive plus the monthly cost of water.

Start a petition by getting all your neighbors to state your reasons for wanting city water and have them sign it. One good reason fluoridation and dental health. Take this to the district councilman representing your area. This will start the ball rolling, it's a long process good luck.

Get the Health dept. to condemn one of the wells then the utility will be forced to extend their main down the street
