It's a possibility. If you have a clogged air filter or dirty fuel filter that can affect your fuel performance. I'd take it somewhere and have it looked at.

RE:
My gas milage is horrible on my 2001 chevy Blazer would that be because of the Fuel Filter?

If the fuel filter has not been changed for some time, just change it. I replace mine every 20,000 kms. You don't say that the SES light is coming on which means the PCM has not detected anything emission related going wrong which means the motor should be running as it was designed. However, it does adjust for driving conditions and wear. I would get the PCM scanned to be sure it has not detected something that affects mileage. Make sure the tune condition is acceptable or new. Get the injectors power flushed and use a fuel conditioner at least twice a year. Other than all that, take the golf clubs out of the back and anything else, fill the tires to 35-40 psi and keep them at that.

The gas mileage on that vehicle sucked coming off the assembly line. If you are experiencing worse gas mileage all of a sudden, try what most technicians try last - common sense. The 4.3 Vortec and 5.7 Vortec have a well known problem with the CFI injection assembly. It is located under the upper intake plenum. The best and fastest way to find out if you are losing fuel due to the failure of a line on the CFI is to pull the spark plugs, easily accessible through the wheel wells with the tires removed. You can do it with the tires on if you raise the vehicle so that the tires are hanging. If you have gas or carbon residue on the plugs on either side, it would be a safe bet that one of those plastic injector lines on the CFI is cracked or brittle and leaking small amounts of gas into the cylinder. This is usually accompanied by a hard start condition, but not always. If there is a leak, and you are mechanically inclined, you can fix it yourself for around 400.00.

fuel filters and fuel pumps are the cause of every thing except a dead battery according to the mekaniks on this forum. Stay away from dealers, they love to sell $300 fuel pumps and filters. A fuel filter clog will shut you down (very rare) so will a fuel pump failure, also not common. If you have a fuel problem the first thing is test the fuel pressure. You could have a more common problem of a leaky injector that dribbles a bit too much fuel. If a mekanik says "I think it might be" that's time to go to another shop. If they don't have the skill to diagnose the problem and say "the problem is and this will solve it" Move on till you find better answers than you get here. And finally, observe your own driving habits. Accelerating and braking can use a lot of fuel. Easy on the throttle.

Things you can do to improve mileage;
1. Tune up
2. Oil change and filter every 3000 miles.
3. one a month add a can of fuel line and injector cleaner to a full tank of gas.
4. Buy a fuel additive that boost the octane.
5. No fast take offs from stopping, un-neccessary excessive fuel use.
6. Try to maintain a steady speed when traveling, look for routes that have the lease stops and go's, use highway as much as possible.
7. Dont run the engine for long stops in lines.
8. Make sure the tire preasure is at the recremended level.

All these together should give you a very noticeable performance increase.

About the spark plug....take the shroud off behind the drivers side front tire. You have straight through access to the plug. I had a 1994 and 2000. As for the gas, I don't know why it would be black unless your line is rusting. Try running Lucas gas treatment. Don't use those other cheap bottles of treatment. It could just be the contaminents coming from the old filter.

The 2 most common causes ( other than driving habits) for poor fuel mileage are dirty air filter and low air pressure in the tires. Make sure to replace the air filter at least every 15K miles and keep tires properly inflated. After that, you could need new spark plugs, wires, ect. depending on vehicle mileage.

The fuel filter is cheap... buy a new one. It should be located on the frame under the driver door. Change the air filter also. Depending on the miles you may want to do an entire tune up.... plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I would change them around 100K.
