Let's face it, most of us expect black people to have the "ghetto" attitude and speech. It doesn't occur to people that we're all born in different places and that we pick up the local accent accordingly. It's ignorance; pay it no mind.

I have had the privilege on a few occasions to hear a black
person speak with a British accent. It has always taken me
back in surprise however. One doesn't think of an English
person as being black. But more starkly white instead. I love
to ask where they are from, and how long they've lived in
England to adopt that accent. And I've never heard one say
they were born in England, but have lived there most of their
lives. So I gather it's not hard to pick up over the years.
As far as no one accepting you are from England, I would
think they'ed have to accept it, if you have the strong accent.
It's not something you can pick up easily on a vacation. Why
even the country is split with different dialects that keep those
from other counties on their toes, trying to understand the
others.

Why do some americans think iam not not black bacause my skin is light. Simply ignorance, I am willing to bet that these people aren't exposed to the world.
People have walked up to me and told me that I couldn't be black. I guess because I didn't fit their idea of a black guy. While others know automatically. My advice laugh it off, otherwise you'll go crazy from all the stupid in the air.

From what I understand many black english refer to themselves as Afro-carribean or African. Not sure what part of the country your in but Americans tend to think anyone with an english accent as British and dont really differentiate whether your black or white.

It does not surprise me whatsoever that you are black. This American is fully aware that there are many blacks born & raised in Britain.
You and I are sort of in the same boat; many people (including some Americans themselves) don't see me as an American because I'm a mestizo and my last name ends in "-ez"

It's because black people are not indiginous to Great Britain, so more than likely you are from England but you're background is from another location. It's the same with Americans, most of us white folks are really from European descent.

Hi Chocolate! Ignorance, mostly. That or the unfortunate circumstance that so many Americans simply aren't color-blind. That is not intended as a compliment. When it comes to people we should ALL be color-blind and be discerning of the person and his or her qualities rather than judgmental of the person's color, gender or national origin.
Best.

My gut answer is because they are uneducated, ignorant and illiterate people.
There are many black people from many different cultures, religions, and ethnicity. You do not have to be white to be English, Scottish, Jewish, Christian, etc.. to belong to any one group of people.
