Well, I think this would refer to getting close with someone and sharing secrets about your personal life that you do not share with your significant other. There is nothing sexual or physical about the relationship, but it gives you a feeling of emotional attatchment.

Many men feel differently about sex and love. Some can separate the physical act from feelings; but for women this is much harder to do. I guess what I'm saying is that emotional affaires usually lead to physical intimacy; but they start out as a good connection between two people. When a man becomes emotionally involved in a relationship, it's terribly painful for him to let go. I interpret your wife's comment like this.... Sure, it would hurt her a lot to find out you had an affair with another woman. But she feels it would hurt her LESS if you SAID that it "had meant nothing" to you..! However.....If you said "I'm sorry this happened..but I have strong feelings for her"...THEN it would be a disaster..... Hope you can see the difference.....

I used to have emotional affairs with a bottle of vodka. That's about as warm and loving as I ever got. Now I'm getting teary eyed with the memories. SOB!!!! Now look what you've done... I guess I'm gonna be changing my name back to Johnny the Drunk again.
