If you installed a brand new bathtub and surround today, how long should it stay decent looking and useable?

We are looking to buy a home where these items will need to be replaced. My husband says he and his father can do this.

My objection is that these two replaced his mom’s about 15 years ago, and it looks pretty rough these days. I want to know if that’s a reasonable lifespan for these products or if these two gentlemen think their skills are better than they really are.

Certainly as others suggest it depends on the substance of both; and in some measure; any abuses they endure, as well as the installers.

A cast iron/ceramic or enamled tub can last a lifetime. If you're going the way of a surround, spend the extra dollars for a decent one; Fiberglass is certainly better than the thin, molded plastic type.

If you have a notion to remain in the house for as long as 15 years; then you should shop quality.

Might depend as much on the quality of the materials as the skill of the installer. We had a tub and surround that lasted 20 years and still looked good. At that time we moved, so don't know how much longer it lasted. Since the guys have done this before, they will probably do a better job this time. Good luck.

For fiberglass tubs they should last a good 15+ years if kept up and cleaned properly. Ceramic tile is another idea which should last as long as you'll own the house.
