I do believe in reincarnation, and I have done enough 'religious studies' to feel adequate to 'explain' it to you.
The first thing you need to know is 'Karma' ... that's the 'payback' for doing good, evil, or nothing in THIS life ... but Karma is also a 'reason' we 'come back in a new life.' If we are 'evil' we could come back as a bug to be 'squashed' ... not once, but many, many times, until we have learned that lesson. Then if our 'evil' was murder, we could come back as a 'food animal' or a 'weak person' to be killed over and over again.
Yes, there are some 'souls' that are 'connected' in some way ... the 'best' being 'soul mates' while others have a 'negative Karma' that needs to be 'worked out' before that soul can 'move on.' Most people don't 'know' the 'connection' although the words 'soul mate' are used frequently, almost as if they mean NOTHING. I am married to my 'soul mate' ... I know this from our experience together, as well as from our astrologer's readings ... and we are both on our 'last life' as beings on this planet, and will next 'reincarnate' in what Christians (I am a Christian, by the way, and a Catholic) call HEAVEN. We could 'decide' to come back to this 'existence' but the ONLY way we could do that is if we built 'bad Karma' between us. I seriously doubt that will happen. We do occasionally argue, but we always make up, and 99.9999% of the time, things are 'perfect' between us even though we may be going through 'seriously hard times.' In the 'next life' we may actually 'come back' as ONE BEING and not two ...
No, you won't 'know' that you knew this 'soul' in an ealrier life. You won't 'know' what your Karma will bring you. THAT would be 'stacking the deck.' Reincarnation is about 'learning from scratch' ... so only if you are very 'fortunate' will you ever 'know' that a person in this life was 'with you' in another ... reincarnation isn't about that kind of 'knowing' unless there is an EXTREMELY IMPORTANT MESSAGE to come with that knowing.
DO NOT go to a 'hypnotist' or anyone who says s/he can 'regress you' to that 'former life.' I've done research on them, and virtually ALL of their clients claim to have come from 'the very famous' ... but there are far too many people on this planet of ours, and you can NOT have 'two souls now' who were 'one particular soul' in the past ... the 'math' just doesn't work.
Just live THIS LIFE as 'well as you can possibly do it' and don't try to look forward or back ... you'll just 'go insane' that way, either literally and legally or 'in your head' ... be good, be helpful, and be kind ... and maybe soon you will be in YOUR 'last life' with your 'soul mate' too ...

Don't think I am too strange OK, but on Unsolved Mysteries they had a man on there that knew he was reincarnated, and even knew who he was in his past life, he supposedly had been a young man who lost his life in war or something, but that's not the strange part, after he had been seen on Unsolved Mysteries, some woman believed that she was reincarnated and knew this man, the man in the past life, and she felt she was his lover, in that past life, she had supposedly jumped off a bridge over the loss of her love. So these two people got together and started to reminisce, and remember events, and these people had never met before, and they lived on opposite ends of the country. So I suppose if this were a true story I would have to say the chances are slim, but maybe not impossible.

If you believe in reincarnation then meeting up with those in your past life would retard progress. Both Socrates/Plato and Buddhists believed that reincarnation is actually a punishment. Coming back means that you still have something left to learn or set right in your being. To not come back, to become a part of the realm of forms or reach nirvana is the goal.
Therefore once we pass from this life and comeback, we must become apart of new institutions and new relationships, otherwise we would constantly be moving in a circle which would defeat the purpose.

Sadly, reincarnation is not true. Once a person dies, his soul ceases to exist as well. "It does not live on in another condition. It does not transmigrate into another form. It is not reincarnated into another creature. It simply dies."
But let's just imagine for the sake of tell-tales. Assuming I would be reincarnated in another person, there would be a chance that I would still feel familiar with the friends and loved ones I'd lived with in my past life;..And I would want to hope that they'd still see me in those pair of stranger's eyes,..and still feel me in that other presence,.. Then at least, somehow, I would know that I were just a body away.

Hi Rena,
Yes I too believe that we regularly connect with the same souls through different life times although our relationships might differ from one incarnation to another. You never know we may have known each other in another life, perhaps in Tudor times and we met at some festivities at a castle! Seriously though I do believe we meet the same souls again and again if we have chosen to do so.

If reincarnation is true and we connect to the same souls, then the people you now know are those from your previous lifes. So unless, you know that now, then I would assume you don't recognize each other, if in fact, you connect to the same people and reincarnation is true.

Ever meet someone that You were drawn to for no reason but couldn't stop thinking about afterwards? That's a clue. Places and events that you remember that you couldn't possibly? Impulses and urges, sudden awarenesses are all pieces of the mysteries. This time I am your sister, last time I may have been your aunt or daughter. Personally, I have never felt anything except female though others may change gender and confuse themselves in the next life. Anything is possible

The same pieces tend to fall back very close together, but not always same order or gender. My youngest daughter this time was my sister last time. My mother last time was my Mentor who I met at 26 this time. On special occasions we are born into strangers. Maybe the need to learn a special lesson, or in some cases of suicide where we throw our cycles off. Thru the different cycles we live we build karmic ties with some & that continues to keep us connected more to them than others. We also develop karmic ties with those we perceive as enemies & tend to see them again also.

In re birth/reincarnation the souls is what is born again. Just see, in death, souls simply goes back to the position prior to birth. SO soul as such do not carry any empirical identity such as name or other personal details. You are what you are only after you were born into this earth, and all the identity of yours is what you have slowly acquired. Souls shuns all such empirical aspects with death. Since the very property of souls is pure consciousness, and pure consciousness is without any empirical contents, soul shall not be carrying anything of the previous birth in the next births. Since we all are enchained in body souls, how can we speak about pure consciousness?

Reincarnation does allow for us to reconnect with souls that are important to us...Often, they will not be the same type of relationship from one incarnation to another. A father in this incarnation may be a son, best friend, wife, etc., in subsequent incarnations...but they will always be special to each other in some way. The souls "choose" each relationship in order to not only learn the life lessons they have set for themselves but to help their cadre of soul-mates learn their life lessons.
