Debit card. Check that it is ready for use abroad, and what the costs are, but mostly it is by far the cheapest option.
Do not take traveler cheques as you pay for getting them, for getting your money back if you are not lucky and you still loose on the exchange rate. If you do take them, go to the bigger bank offices to get your money, not hotels nor touristy shops, as they often charge you.

Credit cards are accepted in many shops, restaurants and (almost) all hotels. Getting cash on them might cost extra, but the fee will be like when you get your cash changed. Check with your credit card company.

Exchange offices that claim not to charge a fee are giving you poorer rates, but they are alright for smaller amounts.

One thing to consider is that the value of the dollar seems to be heading south compared to other currencies. If you think this is going to continue a good plan would be to immediately convert as many dollars to pounds as you feel comfortable carrying with you as you'll benefit from low exchange rates through your bank and the same number of dollars may purchase more than if you wait to convert later.

There's no need for travellers cheques except for the security of knowing you can get your money back if stolen. Use your card in ATMs
