Boil it down to what it is; Three white kids hung hanging ropes in a tree a year ago - they were suspended for their actions as they should have been. Six black students beat a white classmate (and football team-mate) in a supposedly unrelated incident three months later - they were charged accordingly as they should have been. So one of the black guys has been in jail since the incident because of a high bail - Judge's decision based upon the fact that the kid apparently was a trouble maker. No problem so far. Now, my understanding is that this beating incident happened in December of last year. Hello! It's September! Where has Al Sharpton been? My conclusion; It's an opportunity to get in front of a camera and scream "RACISM" that is simply too good for him (Sharpton) to pass up!

Alright, first 3 students hang nooses from a tree on school property, months ago. They are never charged for it because there isn't a law against it in LA. This is wrong, not doubt completely wrong. However, people are trying to link that event with the beating of this kid. While it did create a racial tension I'm sure, they have not as of yet stated that the kid was in any way involved what so ever with hanging those nooses. What we have here are two seperate incidents. While people would like to connect the two the fact remains that there is no solid connection. Now I do agree that these kids should not get attempted murder for this crime, however aggravated battery in the second degree sounds about right. 6 kids some with records beat up 1 kid. No matter how you try to twist it or say it's somehow related to something else the facts stay the same. They should be tried and convicted and sentenced.

They should have been fined, had to pay all hospital and related bills, convicted of assault, made to work a large number of hours in Community service while on probation. The attempted murder charge was wrong. As far as what constitutes a hate crime I think both groups were guilty of racism. For instance: Why did the black group ask permission to sit under the tree where they knew it would incite trouble? The south is a tinder box. They knew that. Yes, the noose incident was racist also. It's the violence that needs to be addressed more than anything.

I think it's completely ridiculous this day an age that white kids can hang nooses in the trees of the school and only receive a slap on the wrist as a punishment. I thought really blatant racism like that died with the Civil Rights Movement. It basically reconfirms my belief that Louisiana is one of the most backwards racist places in the country.
I would also say it is ridiculous that those kids initially got charged with attempted murder considering the person who was beaten was able to attend a school function that night. I think the kids should be punished for what they did and I don't condone violence but the punishment is way too severe for the crime committed. Unfortunately the situation shows that racism is still alive and well in American. I find that very sad that more than 40 years have passed since the Civil Rights Movement and as a country we've advanced so little.

Even though they didn't "start" it, they should face the consequences, as should the others who actually did start it. Those who protest against it wouldn't have much to say if they rounded up all the troublemakers both black and white and dealt with them. This sort of thing shouldn't be tolerated, and should be dealt with the same across the board. It's a hate crime.

There is discord in the south that pits black and white against each other about every 100 years. I firmly believe that until the racial intolerance of both sides is dealt with in a human and logical way the Bible Belt will remain a Belt for violence.

anyone who commits a crime regardless of their color should be dealt with. From my understanding, the young man in question not only beat another young man senseless, it's not his first time dealing with the law. I understand why he was dealt with in this way.

If I lived in Jena, I'd want violent people off the street regardless of race. If it were a white young man doing the beating, I'd say put him in jail.

6 on 1 are not fair odds in any fight. Kangaroo courts are just as bad. This country thrives on division rather than diversity. Sharpton only serves to prove that point.

The race issue is manufactured by people interested in scoring political points. The real issue is one of violence and that should be taking center stage. Violence is unacceptable regardless of race.

I don't care what the race of the people, if 6 people beat the life out of someone they deserve their punishment!!! I don't care if they're white, black or pink with purple polka dots!!!
