It really isn't necessary, and robs some people of thier voice in elections.
Why do you think we should or shouldn't?
In the state I live in, it is virtually guaranteed that my vote will not make a difference(for presidential elections). I know lots of other people are in the same situation. Looking for civil, well thought out answers. Thanks.

nikkor13 - Actually, saying it's the libs who want this gone isn't fair. I'm a Republican in IL who has no say in a presidential election because of Chicago. There are a lot of republicans in CA that have no say. Most large Metro area's vot Dem, and the rest of those states (in many areas) vote Rep. One thing that is completely unfair is that something like 35-40% of the state of California doesn't get counted, and that State counts for 20% of the needed electoral votes. In IL last election, over 40% of the state voted red, yet blue got the whole state. I'm sure there are states where this is reversed also.

Yeah, lose it. I think we'd have a much higher voter turnout overall if we got rid of it. Like how many Democrats in a 80% republican state (or vice versa) don't even bother to show up because they know it's a lost cause.
We probably wouldn't have ended up with George W seven years ago if it hadn't been for the electoral college.
I've lived in states that were really close to a 50/50 split and it really felt great, like my vote counted. Wouldn't it be great if all American's could feel that way every time?

Why could we ought to alter the device that alter into created via people who understood and feared the techniques of tyrants? They understood that the voters must be manipulated. great inhabitants centers could administration the consequences of each and every election and smaller states' hobbies could be disregarded. Plus that's notably unlikely that 3/4 of the states could vote to alter to the favored vote. The founding fathers created the electoral college device for a reason. actual, they did no longer choose direct election of the president via the inhabitants. keep in mind, this is the President of the USA. no longer the president of the folk interior the USA.once you vote for a President, you vote for who your state votes for interior the election. No the place else interior the industrialized has the political device been as good as this is been interior the United Sates over the final 200+ years. as quickly as returned why mess with achievement. this is humorous, in case you examine the Federalist papers, you will comprehend that the Founding Fathers somewhat understood the faults in a organic variety of democracy and thanks to this our device is a representative variety instead. Al Gore's stance on environmental subject concerns boarders on lies. virtually each and every factor of Inconvenient fact has been discredited. Which in result's between the justifications for the electoral college --manipulation of voters.

Libs keep wanting to do away with the Electoral College so that large liberal population centers on both coasts will determine who's elected to the White House. New York City, Philadelphia, Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco and others will all vote Democrat. Conservative populations, which are more rural and spread out, will be shut out. I expect the Clintons will really start pushing this.

As one who lives in a large and populous state sure I would go along with that. I am sure that Delaware or Alaska who have very small populations would think it is better to go with the present system.

No its not time to lose it....the electorial college is set up exactly as the congress...every state gets an 2 (like the senate) plus the same number of electors as they have representatives in congress....larger states have more representation, but at the same time smaller states have enough clout that they cant be ignored. to If you are going to argue to dump the EC.....then by the same logic we should disband the senate

Absolutely. Not only that, but a little direct democracy experiment should ensue. With todays technology, certain issues and legislation should be voted upon directly by the citizenry.
