Yes. It promotes crime and degrades women. There are very few rappers who write intelligent lyrics. And no, I'm not anti-rap. I own many rap albums, but it's not good for kids. Young kids try to emulate their idols, and if they're glamorizing slapping women and robbing people, that's not what kids need to hear.

The thing is, it's not rap. It's MTV and BET and all those damn channels that broadcast that crap. Rap is not filthy as a whole. You can't just say that all rap is filthy. That would be wrong. Just as in any genre there's bad and good. MTV choses to broadcast those videos because it makes money. Not because it's a good lesson for your child. All they want at the end of the day is their money. So they broadcast rap full of materialism, drugs, money, disrespect to women, etc. etc. Basically no, don't let her watch that crap. She probably doesn't relate to it anyway. Get her to listen to more positive rap and hip-hop. Get her to appreciate music. Most kids these days don't care about lyrics. All that matters to them is the "beat". I bet you won't hear a song like this on MTV
arist - song
Blue Scholars - Burnt Offering

or this
DJ Shadow - Midnight In a Perfect World
Heiruspecs - 5ves
Nujabes - Feather

That being said I do listen to "explicit" music, but that was my choice. Either way, your music choice says something about you. I don't condone senseless violence, idiotic materialism, degrading women, or any of that crap you hear on MTV. Have you noticed MTV has gone down the drain?

Ok she is 15 which means her peers are very influential right now. I have seen a few of the MTV videos and they are pretty suggestive if not down right raunchy. Sometimes. The problem is she is 15 not say 10 or 12 maybe you ought to discuss with her the reasons you don't want her to watch MTV the other thing is watch some of the videos with her she may be embarrassed to watch them in front of you because of the content. But realize she is going to watch MTV at her friends houses you can only show her what is right and what is wrong but she has to make her own decisions. You cant make her not like rap music but you can hope that you have taught her better than to be influenced by the videos and the suggestive lyrics of the songs.

If only you could shelter your kids so much. The thing is, with a 15 year old, she's going to listen to and see things anyway if she wants to (eg. on their friend's iPod at school or when they go over to a friend's house.) If you're going to give her the kind of freedom a normal 15 yr old has, you can't filter out all the offensive pop culture and keep it from her impressionable young eyes and ears. But she's never going to talk to you about it because she won't admit to breaking the rules.

If I were you I might go with a slightly more moderate approach that still expresses your firm disapproval of the values of MTV and rap without pretending she is never going to see or hear any of it.

She's only 15 and I think it's your choice.
While I don't believe in censorship or holding your child back from expressing themselves, I do think there should be rules.
She still lives in your house and MTV has gotten ridiculous. I'm only 25, but I remember there being actual music videos with some artistic integrity, not just who can take off more clothing. And the reality shows are nauseating. If I see another 16 brat complaining a that her new BMW is the wrong color I'm going to kill someone.
I, myself, stopped watching MTV years ago and even now many legitimate artists find them irrelavent and A JOKE...

I grew up listening to Rap and the morals and values that my parents had. Don't be oblivious, just because u don't allow her to listen to Rap does not mean that she is not listening to it at her friends house, in school or on the radio. You're not with her 24/7.
I had a friend that wasn't able to listen to Rap, so she would always come over to my house and watch videos and listen to the radio. Her parents were unaware of that and they basically allowed Rap artist to raise their kid.

not everything on mtv is filthy. i'm not a fan of rap so i can't speak on the topic. but mtv has it's afternoon programming that is very PG and geered toward the 12-16 yr old crowds. the music and guests are safe and will not offend. spend an hour watching trl in the afternoon with your daughter and see what happens.

the problem here is that its pointless trying to stop her. if she wants to watch it she will, either at a friends house or when you are out.
the music on MTV is everywhere, on TV adverts on the radio, online, anywhere and everywhere.
i know what you are saying though, i have 2 girls 3 and 9. i know its a bit different to 15 but same rules apply.
at the end of the day you cant wrap them up in cotton wool all of their life. if they don't experience things at home where they are safe, they are just going to go out and find it all for themselves in places that may well be the last place you want them.
she is your daughter so you will always do what you think is right and no one can tell you how to raise your kids but don't forget they will be a lot happier being allowed a Little free life choices especially at her age.
its up to you but i say let her watch, and make up her own mind.

You are her parent. You are the one who makes those kinds of choices for her until she turns 18. Do not worry about what other people think. You know her best and you are the one who is responsible for her.
I feel the same way and do not allow it for my 17 year old daughter either. She listens to rock, etc. but she knows if an inappropriate song comes on, then the music goes off. Definitely no MTV, etc.
She isn't sheltered either. I just am strict about what influences her.
She is a Varsity Cheerleader, on the Academic Team, Color Guard Captain, and on the Speech and Debate Team. (just for the people who will come along and say I am raising a nerd or someone who won't fit in with the "in" crowd.)

Thats a tough decision, no matter what u do she will listen to whatever she wants. Her friends will burn her cds, put it on her ipod, etc. My parents wouldnt let me listen to it, actually made me return a cd I bought, and now it is all I listen to. So you can attempt to but you have to hope she listens to you. It also depends on her maturity, I knew that the music wasnt real life, I just like the beat and word play. Well good luck, hope I helped.
