I bought everything newborn then I had my son who was 10lb 10oz! I thought I was gonna have to return everything and get 0-3months straight for him but luckily the newborn vests/bodysuits fitted him ok.
I had him in nice body suits until he was about 3 months, didnt want to put harsh fibres (i.e. jeans, jerseys) on his delicate skin. You can always return things if you keep your reciepts, I'm sure most places wont mind you exchanging items.
Good luck with your pregnancy x

My baby was born this past January..
I bought her 0-3 month clothes.. they fit a baby that is 8 lbs to 12.5 lbs.

My daughter was born at 6 lbs 3 oz.. and so her 0-3 month outfits were huge on her !

Your baby being born in December.... if the clothes are bigger than that's not a problem because you can always put the baby in layers..

but what you may want to do... is get a pack of long sleeve onsies in the 0-3 months size.. for your baby..
and unless your baby is just huge (bigger than 12.5 lbs) then you should be okay.

i will tell you .. that Zoe.. being small.. 6lbs 3 oz when she was born.. by the time she was 1 month old.. she was a little over 8 lbs.. and fitting fine into her 0-3 month stuff.. and pretty much wore all her 0-3 month stuff until she was 4 months old..

So with that said.. get the 0-3 month size.. if your baby is smaller (like mine was) the clothes will be a little big.. you'll have to roll up the sleeves, and such.. but they will work okay.. not to worry.

Other tips..

Get the long sleeve onsies.. 2 packs.. because your baby will probably be wearing them alone or under most everything .. and most newborns spit up a lot.. so you may be going through 4 of them a day easily ..

so get about 10 of the long sleeve onsies..

Also.. get some of the blanket sleepers with feet.. those are nice and warm.. and I know at our Walmart here.. they have a pack of 2 of those blanket sleepers going for 9.xx. Which isn't bad.

But stick to 0-3 month size.. that should be fine for the first few months. Even if the baby comes in at 8 or 9 lbs.. he or she should still be able to wear the stuff for 2 or 3 months.

Other things you can do if money is tight.. is check out your local Craig's List.. sometimes there are mother's who are giving away their babies clothes..

And check Ebay.. sometimes you can get a whole lot of baby clothes for near nothing.

Finally.. I will offer.. if you need help with getting stuff.. if you contact me...... I will try to help you out.

My best wishes !

My daughter was 7lb 11 oz when she was born, even though her ultrasound estimate was 9 lbs 12 oz. I went through the same thing last year(my brat was born on 12/14, lol) Buy 0-3 months clothes. If you have easy access to a washer and dryer, then you can get away with buying even less if you do laundry a lot. I got some cute outfits from my baby shower for outings. But you'll be at home a lot and it's not neccessary to buy a lot. My daughter lived in nothing but onesies under terrycloth/flannel sleepers for the first three months of her life. Buy about 20 onesies, 14 sleepers and some extra large recieving blankets. Besides outerwear(They make these wonderful little fleece "snowsuits" for newborns, one of those) you don't really need anything else. You won't need shoes, but a pair of slippers can be nice. They may be big at first, but they grow so fast. At nine months my daughter 31 inches and 23 pounds, 3 times her birthweight(her dad's 7 ft and 450 though lol) and 11 inches taller than she was. She's wearing size 18 months now, and all the pretty 12 month clothes I stockpiled for winter during clearances last year will never be worn. Buy used as well, goodwill and other thrift shops usually have a nice selection of never worn or slightly used infant clothes. Good luck!

I had my son last December, he was on the "larger" side, he weighed 9.10lbs. I mostly had him in the pj style outfits with the feet in them. I never used onesies or little outfits. I rarely used the "gowns" too. After a few months I started using long sleeved onesies with little sweat pants from Target, they are $3.99 each, they are really good to use as well. Some socks would be great and some little beanies for the baby too. I had a lot of cute outfits that people got for him, but he never wore them. It was so sad and a waste. He wore Newborn size for about 2 weeks and then was into the 0-3 months until he was about 2 months old. But he was big already. Good luck. I suggest going to Target to buy baby clothes...they are reasonably priced and cute...Old Navy has cute ones too, when they have sales it's great!

You will need 0-3 months long sleeve onesies because of the time of year if it is cold where you are. Depending on the brand check the weight for that size. My kids were both around the 7lb size but I know people who had almost 10 lb babies. If your hospital has the t-shirts then take a couple if they are available. They wear them until the belly button falls off which is about 2 weeks. The feety pjs are great in the beginning. Get some of those then you should be good for a little while.

Worry more about things being too small. The only thing that needs to fit snugly are the sleepers for nighttime (to reduce the risk of SIDS). Other things can be bought 0-3 or 3-6 month size and rolled up for an infant who won't be crawling or walking.

1st child - 8lb 5oz - 0-3 months for about 8 weeks, then 3-6
2nd child - 4lb 12 oz when she came home - even some preemie clothes were too big.

My son never fit into newborn clothes and he was only able to wear 0-3 months clothes until he was 1 month old. But he was a 10 lb baby who was formula fed, so he grew really quickly. My advice would be to skip newborn clothes and buy 0-3 month warm sleepers. Your son will live in these at this time of year. You should buy 4-5 of them. Also buy long sleeve onsies. You can get these in a pack of 5. The gerber brand is cheap but runs really small. If it is cold where you live then you will need a warm bunting or coat if you plan to take him outside at all. You will also need socks and you will only need about 2 outfits to take him out to the store or other people's houses. You shouls also try Once Upon a Child or other baby resale stores. You can get nice, gently used baby clothes for really cheap. At the beginning, they grow so much and I hated spending so much money on clothes that he would quickly outgrow, so I got all of his clothes at Once Upon a Child and saved so much money.

Skip the newborn and just get a bunch of 0-3 months. Even if they are a bit big, they'll only be that way for a month or so.

Also, dont worry about all those extras, like dresses and jumpsuits and pant/jacket outfits. Just get a few onesies and 4-6 sleepers, since its december and baby can get cold easily.

When baby is young, all those "cute' outfits are more of a pain than they're worth. Baby looks cute in simple stuff!

Also, dont go tooo overboard.... wait utnil your shower to shop if money is tight. If you're trying to be sure you'll be covered, get yourself gift cards and go shop after the shower.

My last baby, my daughter, was born 9lbs 12 oz. She was in 0-3 months for maybe 2-3 weeks, then 3-6 months for about 2 months, then 6-9 for about 3-4 months. My advice - buy some of all the sizes. Don't buy too many of the little ones. They grow SO fast!! Some of my daughter's outfits she never even wore. B/c she grew so fast and she started out as a big baby.

My son was 8 pound 9 ounces and wore the 0-3 month size for the first couple months.

I barely used the little matching outfits and preferred the gowns or zip up jammies, even when I went out (you cover up their legs with a blanket anyway).

You can get great deals on eBay for big lots of infant clothes, as well as yard sales and craigslist. You might try putting a posting on craigslist asking if people have clothing they would donate to you.

ps: as you see from other answers, people have their own preferences. Don't buy a bunch of supplies (diapers, wipes) or clothing in advance, you'll save more money by figuring it out as you go.

My son was born at 29 weeks and even the preemie clothes were too big for him at first. Some of the preemie clothes went up to 7 pounds so he wore those for a couple of months when he came home (He was 3 LBS, 15 oz when he was born and 6 pounds even when he came home)
